Do the leak or are the 100% waterproof.?

Just debating as never used them (will be shortly) Do I need liners?

Cheers

Mine don't leak but some do. Anything you put in the bare alluminium without a bag will however be blackened in contact with the metal.

If you don't fancy the inner bags (which are very good) go for bin liners or similar.

Mine do not leak, they are so airtight that a significant pressure change ( like coming down a mountain) makes them very dificult to open, and when you do manage the prise them open you will hear the air rushing into them.

I regularly wash them with a pressure washer, they do not leak.

I have had condensation in them so it is best to use bags that will resist a bit of damp.

As they are rectangular it is easy to find bags that fit, I use a pair from a previous r1200 RT which fit nicley and leave room at the top for spare gloves ,maps, mars bars etc. but we have found that we have an assortment of bags that fit.

Get the sizes and go see what you can find at the local market stall.

mine leak, but the inner bags are very good and the water didnt get through those

My topbox is as described above, watertight and sometimes difficult to open. The left hand pannier is fine but the right hand one does tend to get wet inside from time to time.

I use the BuMW inners which are pretty good and great for taking on holiday without the bike. They are tough, waterproof and fit nicely inside a Ryanair cabin baggage measurer - and can hold enough kit for a week (if packed sensibly).:thumb

Mine didn't leak, but have dropped the bike with them on when off roading. Had to hammer them back into shape :augie so they do leak somewhat now.

Inner bags keep my stuff clean and dry so would use those regardless if they didn't leak.

mine

leak sometimes and do that airtight won't open thing at other times. It's sometimes better to release both latches and then close them again to get a better seal.

Mine have never leaked once...they are 100% waterproof in my opinion.

....they are, as has been described, vacuum tight sometimes!!

I would recommend the BMW inner bags...they are excellent...and stop your clothes etc marking on the metal.

I do often get some condensation in the l/h pannier in certain conditions....which is caused by the heat from the exhaust...but it has never leaked.

Overall I think the panniers and inner bags are excellent :thumb2

Spot the dealer ;)

I'd agree with most of whats above, Mine wouldnt appear to have leaked, I do occationally find there is condensation inside, but thats about it. The main reason for going for the inner bags will be the bare ali will mark up anything that rubs against it, even my inner bags are starting to look a bit shabby (maybe BM need to sell inner bags for the inner bags ;) )

Definately get the inner bags with them, I got mine through in free as I bought the whole thing as one job lot.

If you are picking up new panniers at this time of year DO NOT RIDE WITH THEM UNTIL YOU HAVE TREATED THEM as mentioned above, they are bare aliminium and in these conditions will pit and corrode before you've even managed to ride them home.

Love and care:comfort

yep, thats a good start... do a search, there are plenty of postings about GSA Panniers and Corrossion

what you treat them with is up to you, but bare ali will corrode - I've treated mine with ACF50 they get an annual coat before the salt goes on the roads...

out of curiosity, who have you bought yours from? because imho the dealer should have discussed all of this with you especially as the bike will be going out in the winter...

Not a dealer....just a satisfied customer!

There is enough doom and gloom on here sometimes about what is overall an excellent bike.....so I think a pat on the back for a product that works isn't out of order :augie

I bought from Cannon in Essex.

No mention of treating the panniers. In fairness the bike does not see the road unless its a good dry day, I ride all year round but not if its wet or damp as I dont have to. Also the panniers are not on the bike that much.

Is a good car wax any protection?

Sheeeesh! You pay that price and they still leak?! My H&B's were 100% waterproof and cost a fraction of the price.

:toungincheek

:D

I spray mine with FS365 and wash them after a salty ride :ymca ... but still have some pitting ... spent hours polishing them the other day ... they look fine now, so not too bothered ... they are, after all functional ...
