I am starting to have grief with BMW over a corrosion issue. They say that the damage was done by a stone. I say to do that much damage you would need half a brick! The paint on the spring and the metal itself must be at fault as I picked it off with my fingernail.

Anyway, I think this is either a production fault or??

This part of the spring is not exposed to immediate road cack and nothing can enter that void with any force to do that damage without hitting anything in the vicinity.

Any other spring faults like this around?

Pix coming.

i have to say looking at the pic i agree with them,at some point small sharp stone has penetrated the paint and corrosion started there all imo obviously

I agree, looks like a stone chip, shit happens, a friend of mine had a stone hole his rad recently, he now has rad guards.
Remove any loose paint, clean and dry thoroughly then touch up with enamel paint and forget about it.

for a chip its pulled a whole lot of paint / coating off! its not good and the coating looks piss thin to me, id keep at em ..its a 2017 bike ffs:blast

I agree. I can't for sure say what the initial cause was. But to have that much corrosion with a pampered 2k miles bike is not right; surely?

It's not good, that's for sure. Don't Touratwat do some sort of shock cover? If so, and BMW play hardball, I'd touch it up and slap a cover on it.:thumb

Or just buy that 1290S.:D

I am very tempted. My missus says she would divorce me. I'd miss her :aidan

it started as a very small chip and water/corrosion getting under the paint has lifted it,stones dont mind what year the bike is:D

You'd be surprised where stuff gets flung up to - there is plenty of dirt around the spring and surrounding area in the photo that must have been flung up off the road - just clean thoroughly touch up the paint to stop corrosion and carry on.

It's not really good enough, but I'm guessing BMW will disagree with the bike being pampered just by looking at the state of the hoses, frame etc behind the shock and therefore assume you have just wiped the shock over before showing them.
Of course this should make no difference after just 2000 miles on a bike that by it's very nature should be able to cope with a spot of rain and occasional off road bimble, but I doubt they will see it this way.:(

I look after it well but don't clean inside the front spring. I think you're right it isn't good enough.

If the same damage occurred on a suspension spring under your new BMW car would it be an issue?
Its a sheme its happened but dont let it spoil your riding pleasure.

What's not good enough? How can any manufacturer or dealer be responsible or stone chip damage.

The best way to prevent it to fit a shock tube.. Give it clean and touch it up with a bit of white paint and fit one.

Agree with you , come on BMW cant be responsible for a rouge stone ffs , shit happens .

No you won't, you'll be away on the bike having fun all the time. Why did she have to dangle that carrot?!:D

And you'll meet a much younger model who's not a two-faced control freak bitch.

Do it,get the KTM !!

A small blob of white nail varnish when it first happened might have saved it, now it needs the rust sorting and a bigger blob of nail varnish which should sort it :thumb2
