1. Just read my manual for my new 08 GSA. It states (translated) "The top box shall be removed or used with the backrest for off-piste". Any of you know the rationale behind this?

2. The manual also states a max load of 5 kg (about 10 lbs - all riding conditions) for the top box. Anyone with an explanation for this, or have you ever experienced any problems with an overload?

3. Also noted that even though BMW "uprated" the bagage set to 180 kmh (about 110 mph) some years back as I remember it, they still quote the tank bag to be limited to 130 kmh (about 80 mph). Have to admit I have been quite a bit faster than that on several ocations and never exp any problems. Yes I know the Germans are conservative, but also thorough. So I'm all ears

It's just BWM covering their backside, if you exceed their specified limits and something goes wrong, like a box detaching, you will have no comeback. Companies cannot allow for common sense nowadays (McDs and hot coffee comes to mind) as there is not a lot of it about.

Common sense

You are more than likely right, all (companies) have to watch their back.

The answer to my first question appears to be slightly different - I don't see this so much as a specified limit since you apperantly may use it for off road, but only with the back rest installed. It could be that the back rest offers some protection for the rider (and then back to your BMW expl)

No limits

was gonna say, my tank bag is cool upto an indicated 120mph... obviously all done within the speed limit :augie

Understood, but then again I was under the impression that there are no legal speed limits set out side the road network :aidan

Surprise

Gentlemen, I'm surprised. With all our collective exp and wisdom and we are not able to come up with an answer to a basic question about how to go about use of the BMW top box when being a little adventurous with our bikes off road (iaw the 08' GSA User Manual)?

PS Just an after thought, I would have thought that some BMW dealer or one student to one of the instructors on one of theese excellent off road courses that we pay for would have been able to shed some light on the subject

PPS An other after thought. The BMW manual does not list this as a /!\ WARNING so I guess it is not safety related then:augie
