GSA topbox on XR

Is anyone thinking of putting a GSA topbox on their XR? I have a GSA topbox, and had decided to just use soft luggage on the XR, but after a seeing picture on one of the other forums, it doesn't look too bad, especially wrapped in black.

That was a TT box, so if anyone is thinking of using a GSA box, or has already, what parts will I need to do the job? Will the Touratech top box mount work with the BMW box?

If I get an XR to replace my GS Adv next year - I'll be fitting a Vario top-box and for touring........... a pair of 38ltr Metal-Mule panniers

I'd do the same for a Multi-strada.

Up the stelvio on a loan bike with a vario taken straight off a gs, I agree with nutty the tinbox off the gsa looks better but how much can you get inside !

It does, but I don't need panniers, so just a top box, or soft luggage will do me. I generally prefer Kreiga soft luggage, but as I have the GSA box sat on the shelf, if I can fit that to the XR, then it makes sense to make use of it.

Yes it does, however if you have a gs top box kicking around then you can swop n change without having to cough up £££, I'm not sure about the XR dedicated top box but the panniers are somewhat flimsy and cannot compare against the vario's .

Just read in MCN that it the XR luggage is smaller and flimsier than the GS stuff. I guess luggage wasn't seen as such a priority on a sportier bike - pity because it could make a good long distance tourer, maybe BMW will fix this on future versions. Seems a bit too revvy for long distance riding too, 6250 rpm at 85mph. Would be good to get some opinions on what it's like fully loaded with a pillion compared to the LC.

If you want to load it with luggage, sit on 85mph for long periods of time, and carry a pillion, this isn't the bike for you.

I was sort of coming to that conclusion, thought that it might be a suitable alternative to the TE for European trips, probably a hoot if touring alone.

id sell the GSA box and invest in some kriega us 20s, stack en on ,they will look better hold more and be lighter …and waterproof ...

Nutty, the BMW soft bag (it used to be silver and is now a better grey colour) looks fine on the bike. The smaller bag would be good enough for most things. The bigger bag looks OK, too. You could live in that.

Touratat / Windowlick do some tidy bags, too.

I use Ventura on my S1000R and the RR for a fortnight away. It was /is fine. No idea if they make the rails for the XR but I guess they will.

I have the BMW large soft bag on order for mine which may actually be too big for my needs but better too much than not enough. I also have a bags connection tank bag for days out and am considering Kriega US20 and 10 for small trip flexibility.

No panniers and box for me on this one as I think they spoil the look and from what i have seen are small and impractically shaped any way.

Just to add to the list of suggestions for consideration, I recently used Wolfman luggage bags on the GS to good effect on a 12 day trip to the Alps and Pyrenees. I went for the Monarch Pass with Exped dry liners and left the bags on the bike each night and just removed the liner bags.
I really liked how light they are (compared to my Touratwat panniers) and how they keep the weight balanced and down low. You can also compress all the air out of the liners so they pack down small. Mine were 38 litres in total which was plenty.

They now come as standard with a kit which means they fit on most types of existing racks (they fitted my TT rack perfectly)

Might be worth a look!

Thanks for the suggestions folks, but I already have the Kreiga Us5, 10 and 30 bags! I just wanted to see if anyone was thinking of mounting the GSA box to the bike, as I also have one sat on the shelf most of the time. Does anyone know if the Touratech base will work with the BMW box?

I have a new style large BMW soft bag from my GS that I'll be using on my XR. They hold 55 litres.
I just toured Scotland for 6 nights on my GS and the soft bag wasn't even full, It still had plenty of room for bottles of whisky from my distillery tour.
