GSA Tyre Wear?

I have an 09 GSA with tourance EXPs and the front tyre has cracks on the centre line on the tread blocks.

Tyre is wearing strange too. A bit 'pointy' if you know what I mean, front end feels a bit vague sometimes too.

I'd be interested to hear what they say about the cracks. Please report back.

I have arranged to return it to Metzeler I am putting a new pair of Conti trail attacks on tommorow and the old tyre is being collected Friday.

I will report back If and when I hear from them.

I have always liked tourances but I dont like the look of these and it does not sound like they are the only ones out there. So i thought I would try the Contis. There seems to be lots of good words about them on this site, + I have used road attacks on a R1200 RT and liked them.

I've always squared off my tyres, whoever made them. Must be too much commuting.

Only thing no one has mentioned is front suspension. Just wondering whether anyone thinks that the softer GSA suspension would increase side wear? I upgraded to Wilbers, so have rebound adjustment. If I remember correctly they don't have this as standard, otherwise I'd have advised sticking a bit more on?

Anyhow just an idea.

Deaninkl -- Are your tyres "Tourance" or "Tourance EXP"?

'Cos you said "original Tourance" ----That could be the bikes original tyres.
Or the first Tourance and not the later Tourance EXP.

Sorry! -- I'm in my dotage and easily confused!

My tires are Tourance. They were on the bike when I bought it new.

I'm trying to get a new set out here in Malaysia or Singapore at the moment.
My riding is long fast commutes (380km motorway one way each Monday and Friday) and real twisty jungle roads at the weekends. Back is just starting to sqaure off, but not anything to wory about.

If you remember Dunlop? Triangulars from years ago, then that is what it looks like now at 3200 miles.
Tried to photograph it, but the photo doesn't really show the wear pattern.
It has worn on the sides far more than than the centre, such that I can feel the profile "falling" into a turn

This is how my RT used to wear fronts (positively scary after 7.5k). The GSA is still rounded at 8k and good for a few '000 more (Conti Trail Attack). Mixture of country roads and dual carriageway.

Doesn't help much I realise.

G5RJO -- Yes! "pointy" is a good description of the wear on my front, which prompted me to start this thread.

How many miles have you put on your front tyre?

I think that I will not be having EXP's again.

4500m at present, very little real wear on the tyre it's just the profile is strange. Pressures are accurate e.t.c. and I don't really 'push' the steering very often.

The back, again an EXP is slightly squared and almost 1/2 gone. Bit of a blow really as was hoping it would take me to 8k and therefore be okay for my fast approaching Alpine jollies. Looks like it's coming off to get replaced before my hols and I'll keep the part worn as a spare.

Had a little run out yesterday with a a guy I met in the pub, and his mate, both on ApriliaTouno's, upto Scotland and and back via Kielder and Alston.
Good run out!

Point is :- The GSA's at 3600 miles and I'm going to have to fit some new tyres very very soon! Like tomorrow,
I have NEVER got under 4000 miles from a tyre. I am more used to 7-8000 from a rear, and at lest that from a front.

deaninkl posted that he thought Metzler had stopped making the EXP, though they are shown on their website, so I don't know.

One thing I do know, is that I will definitely not be having EXP's again!!!!

Put some new tyres on yesterday -

Have had Metz, Pirelli and Michelin in the past and to be honest there is not much to choose between them.
The TouranceEXP's had just under 4000 on them, that's sports bike tyre mileage as far as I'm concerned.

Anyway, just for something completely different (for me) I put Avon Distanzias on.

First impressions after 100 miles yesterday to scrub 'em in:-

1. softer ride than the EXP's - like the tyre wall is not so rigid.

2. they need a bit of a tug on the bars to get down for a corner - that may be the tyres, or it may be me needing recalibrating after the way the profile on the front EXP went pointy ---- time will tell.

Cost £195 fitted and balanced - is that a good price?
