Hi all,

I'm currently negotiating with a dealer over a used GSA and part of the deal is getting new tyres fitted. I've searched through the forum but can't really find what I'm looking for so thought I'd ask!

I'm a fan of Pilot Road 4s on road bikes but what's the Trail version like on the weighty GSA? Any other tyre recommendations?

Thanks in advance :)

PR$ trail is the PR4 for the big heavy GS and road use only unless you want to fall off in which case go off road with them !

I would suggest the PR4 GT on the rear as it will last longer !

An alternative IMO would be the Metzler Roadtec 01

You can't go far wrong on PR4s
I have the trail on and getting about 4000 ish on the back

I've currently got PR4 trails on, and so far they have been excellent. Only done around 1500 miles though so I couldn't comment on wear rate.....yet.

I suspect that with the compound profile (see below) that a lot of motorway/dual carriageway work will square them off reasonably quickly.

I'm tempted to try the Dunlop Roadsmart 3 next year, as they have a hard centre/medium side combination.

I always had the Dunlop Sportmax series on my sports bike & they were consistently excellent.

Interesting! The Roadsmart 3 looks similar to the standard PR4. Anyone tried standard (non-trail) PR4s on a GSA?

I had a GT version on the rear of my GSA

No probs and no difference in handling etc

Subjective but....i Won't be getting pr4s again. Rear is very prone to punctures dead centre on rear. 3 in 3000 miles on centre bead. Back to continue trail attack for me. Got steady 12k out of each 3 sets

I have had PR4s on my GS but now have Conti Trail Attacks. The PR4s were great but I actually think the contis are better even in the wet. The only negative against the conti trail attacks are they make a bit of noise but that is being picky.

I have Anakees III on mine at the moment and they are good tyres, however I'm struggling to see how some can get 12K out of a rear tyre I'm looking to change mine at 4K. So can it really make the difference that roads up here in the Highlands can be that more abrasive over those of the rest of UK???

On honestly don't see how it's possible to get 12k out of a tyre...........and you guys are talking in miles!!! 5 - 6000kms is all I can ever get out of a rear of any make.

My anakee III s were changed at nearly 6000 miles and if I had only be using them in the south might have done another 1500/2000 miles, but the rear was very square. I spent ages looking into it but in reality had to get what i could get fitted on the day, which is tourance next. I have done about 1500 miles in mainly dry conditions but have been very happy with them so far.

I have had several sets of PR4s on other bikes and had numerous punctures and less miles, but with great grip. The Anakees are noisy.

My Diversion 900 was prone to rear punctures but solved with a zip tie stretched across the swing arm close to the tyre. The idea (which seemed to work is that nails etc get picked up by the tyre but only cause a puncture after a few turns of the wheel have knocked it through. The zip tie knocks them out before the first turn has finished.

Has anyone though up a way to do this on a single side swing arm?

Clever idea is that, was it yours??

Now going to throw a spanner in
If you are looking at an lc gsa then yes the pilot road 4 gt will fit
But if you are looking at a tc up to 2013 gsa then it won't
The pr 4 are a very good tyre I use then and on ave get 7500 per set hope when I move to my new bike and change to the gt they are even better

It's a combination of good, grippy road surfaces and the way that you accelerate and brake. I've never got more than 4.5K miles out of a bike with 100 + bhp.

Avon Trailrider

just put a set on for the run up to Ullapool - good price @£210 onto loose wheels
will report back after the weekend !

I was given the idea by an old cyclist who had the wire across his frame at the bottom bracket. I first used it on a Honda XL250 which would went from a puncture every other week to never having another puncture while I kept the bike.

Thankfully, the GS has been pretty good as there is no way to run a wire close to the tyre tread.

Large motorbikes have only ever usefully given me about 5K from the back and sometimes 10K from the front. I had more just the once by running the back extremely thin and the front was sliding all over the place. I wont be dong that again.
