'morning all,
New user here after a bit of advice/reassurance.
I have a 2005 GSA and have a few worries over vibration. I get a noticeable sinusoidal vibration that dosn't seem to be related to engine speed . I've read through a few threads on tinternet without realy bottoming it out.
Also, generaly the bike seems quite smooth except when, very occasionaly I go over 70, the engine seems quite coarse- right up to 90 ish (thats about the limit for me).
Ive had a few BM's in the past both K's and air head boxers and have never really noticed anything like this- is this typical?
The bike is like new in all respects with just 4k on the clock.
Cheers all!

Welcome to the site :thumb

Is it worse in a particular gear at a certain road speed? ( like 30mph) ;)

There is some vibration from the shaft drive on the Adventure at higher speeds - it's because of the angle of the UJs. Could it be that? Alternatively, worn tyres (particularly Tourances) can also cause odd vibrations.

Maybe a bit of snot in your cylinders??

Sorry but I couldn't resist it.

There are so many potential causes for vibration that its impossible to diagnose from your post - won't stop many of us trying though!

For peace of mind get it checked out by someone who knows - maybe a fellow tosser in you parts might offer help?
Could be normal - might be serious. Best find out either way.

check the crashbars. The mounts have a habit of fracturing on BMW ADV crashbars which can cause vibes. But i'm not sure if they'll be sinusoidal vibes. :D

Thanks for the replies chaps.
I,ve checked every thing is tight an not cracked- especially the crash bars. One thing I noticed is that if I rev the bike up on the main stand the top or the rear horizontal stay of the crashbars really start to shake over about 4500 rpm- just like a 180 Lav in fact.
I,ve also noticed a bit of play in the rear wheel- not much but enough to notice - is this normal?
I have a mate with a standard GS visiting on the weekend so I'll have a chance for a back to back comparison for the first time-will keep you posted.

Thanks again,

Ok, spent a bit more time on the bike today. The cyclic vibration seems to be limited (or only noticeable) in 4th gear. Especially more noticeable when running up a long hill in a restricted area 40mph ish- seems to disapear if I change up/down.
I might just change the oil in the gearbox and the FD on the weekend and have a looksee at the condition of the fluid-
Will keep you guys posted.

Any tips for getting petrol splash marks from my screen?

If its only done 4k is it on the original tyres. Coule be a chance the rubber is out of shape/perished if its sat on them for a few years.

Just back from a trip down to Kent and mine does something very similar (2004 1150 GSA). In any gear, once you get past 4K revs, there is some vibration through the handlebars and pegs and it all feels a bit 'rough'. In top gear, you get to about 75mph and the same thing happens - vibrations and rough feeling but the bike still accelerates well.....just feels a bit harsh. The bike was serviced not too long ago (it is new to me last weekend). If it was a four cylinder, I would say that the carbs were all out of sync - this is the type feeling I get.

Is this normal?

Will try and arrange a go on another local GSA to compare - any takers near Cambridge?

Thanks

James
