I hope that we can start an international unchained web site to extol the vertues of those small independent gems that we come across on our travels.
The Unchained aim is to give you a place to make recommendations, and to use other people's recommendations as part of your trips.

I n your help now though, to get sufficient recommendations to make it work from day one, so please can you help.

As a Brit ex-pat in the US, I took a 10k mile ride last summer to discover my new home's offerings. The ride had 22 miles of interstate only (unavoidable) and I only stayed and ate at unique one-offs, no chain restaurants or motel.

I was asked if I could put something together for others and I'm nearly there.

What I'm looking at is a reference site for unique eateries and services, where you can post comments, location (gps ref) and where others can then input a route and see where the nearest unchained services are. It needn't be a full package, a great bacon buttie or cup of tea, is enough. A clean toilet at a campsite, or a happy waiter will do.

Below is the text from the under construction page. I'd love to have your input now, so that when we launch, there will be useful info from the get go.

There are many exciting plans for Unchained and I'd be delighted if you'd come along for the ride.

I'll see if we can link to this site too, but would guess we need some traffic first.

Welcome to Unchained

The simple goal of this site is to banish bland.

Here you can share the splendidly diverse experiences of fellow travelers who have commended services that have excelled.
You can add your own recommendations, be it a particularly pleasant pie, a ‘fluffsom’ bath-towel, a vista that cries ‘gaze in awe’, or a simple, but heartfelt, smile.

To achieve this, Unchained is designed to promote the individualistic, to champion the creative, to share the obscure and highlight those establishments that offer exceptional value.
The only criteria?
They must be one-offs and not part of corporate chains and personal experiences, not hear say.

To establish the credibility of Unchained, only referrals made by you, the travellers, seekers and discoverers of outstanding service will be included. All that’s required is, you share your discoveries with others.

Record details of the provider, their location (GPS ref if available) and share your comments in Unchained and you will be able to see where others recommend too. Input your trip and see a locator of Unchained services that are near your planned route, plus what fellow travelers have discovered there.

Try an unchained venue or service for yourself, then, add your comments.

If you value diversity, then you too, will want to banish bland and become Unchained.

While this site is under construction, you can post your Unchained recommendations to:

[email protected]

The more we get, the better it will be, so please help, send your recommendations and pass the word on.

Thank you.

Trust the blarney of the Irish

In the best traditions of Irish literature, Joyce, Shaw and Chris de Beur ('praps not), you can rely on an Irish guy to sum up elloquently what I've taken pages to try and relate to you all.

Steve, I applaud your ideals & wish you the best of Irish

In this world of 'I'm lovin' it' & 'Have it your way', where towns in America, Ireland & Morocco are all sprouting the same signs & logo's its often easier to park under the golden arches and order the same cr@p every time

But we should go the extra mile & seek out a more individualistic offering - we're GSer's for fecks sake, what do we know about following the herd

Worst case we'll have something to whinge about but hopefully we'll find that spot that does the perfect cuppa or an apple tart like your Granny used to make. Plus we'll meet like-minded people and sure isn't it a great excuse to get out on the bike this year - 'I have to go love, I'm doing research for Lamble'

for the more adventurous

I'm looking at adding an unchained and undiscovered section to www.unchainedworld.com

These will be places without recommendations that need to be tried out.
I'll work on a prize for the person/s who make the most conversions, but I'll need lists of foodie places and accommodation and travel services, if you can send them.

Name, business, address is all we need for undiscovereds.

I hope you can help.

Plus don't forget, [email protected]

Thanks folks.

some examples

I've had recommendations from wide and varied places, some like a Tibetan Tea room in Scotland and Etheopian restaurant in Seattle seem a little bizarre. I've also personally stumbled on a Spam Cafe, specialising in...Spam and an oyster burger at a pub, plus a steak cooked on a hot stone but with a ground coffee bean crust, surprisingly tastey.

I'm still looking for many, many, more recommendations.

Can you guys and gals help. It's global.

[email protected]

PS. The graphics are sorted, the database constructed, now all that's needed is to get them both to work together and lots of recommendations to be input.
