1150gs reasons for and against headguards or engine bars! Any advice appreciated.

Many thanks

Right, just doled out advice elsewhere, so now my turn!...:type

Anyone got any recommendations as to which bars to fit?
Two reasons - (i) some seen to almost go over the top of the pot, when if dropped the damage seems to be to the bottom corner of it; (ii) I've heard somewhere in the forums that some types can actually damage the engine rather than protect it.

Suggestions for cheap bars/guards also useful plus how easy they are to fit, do they use the original bolts etc.

Covers everything?

Thanks:thumb

The 1150 Engine casings are a WAY more robust affair than that of the 1200.
To that end if you fit , shall we say St eptoes Head guards , they will
cover all eventualities very effectively , these are also Very easily fitted.
Should you chose Engine Bars , i would opt for Hepco and Becker
these protect awfully well , but are a real pain to fit. The rear most mount
point goes thru the point where the casings and subframe meet.

And Yes , I really am a Sex God !

I recently went to France after getting a 1150 GSA fitted with BMW head protectors and BMW bars with a mate who was on a 1200 GS with no protectors fitted.

During the weekend we ended following my Zumo down a farm track for miles. It was pitch black and very wet and muddy with very deep ruts. Eventualy.. I fell of:blast But the bike sat their on the side bar and BMW adveture pannier.. I picked it up checked it over and was amazed and happy to find no damage:bounce1

The next day my mate also managed to fall of at quite low speed whilst on a track. He had no protection, and managed to punch a hole through the rocker cover that imeditley leeked oil:mad:

We manged with the help of Martin Pegler who runs the Battlefield tours to make a temporary repair. But this could easily have wrecked the whole weekend.

So I would say that fitting either parts would be a good idea, or to fit both would be money well spent. I know some people say that the heads are not really expensive.. but if you do damage one you could easily end up stuck.
