Had it with GS screen - any recommendations for aftermarket fly screen?

No buffeting just wind like you get with a naked bike.

Just enough protection to make motorway cruising comfortable.

I am well pleased with it, but its a bit expensive for what it is - a small bit of ABS plastic not even painted with some metal brackets and screws. And it vibrates quite a lot. Still I guess that's the price of progress :)

Hi Grizzly

I have read your thoughts with interest as I recently bought an '04 1200 and like most people, the noise and buffeting are tremendous. I still have a hard time understanding how a bike that is designed to do big miles can possibly offer such poor protection from its stock screen when hitting motorways.

Anyway...

Recently fitted a Nippy Norman High & Wide and whilst there is a definite improvement, motorway riding is still fairly unpleasant. I have now removed the screen entirely and am now seriously considering the Wunderlich Flow Jet.

Before I placed an order, I was wondering if you are still getting on well with it some months after fitting?

Small screen? DIY !!

Currently moved to my GSA

I've just bought my first ever GS, an '07' 1200, and it's got the Wunderlich Ergo screen fitted.
BMW1200GS1.jpg

Done 300 miles on it since yesterday lunchtime and I've yet to put my visor down:thumb. Cruising at motorway speeds and a brief three figure blast (on a private airfield of course:augie) have been a joy compared to my TDM850. I'm 5'11" and there's no buffeting at all, no windblast on my chest and I'm able to breath normally with the visor open even though I am looking over the top of the screen :clap. Obviously not compared it to the standard screen but as it's so good I shall leave well alone.
Also when riding the TDM for more than 15 miles ear plugs are a must but not yet worn them on the GS-although I may try them to shut out that bloody tractor engine racket

In the latest Wunderlich catalog the Flowjet is now available in original bike colours, will be ordering mine in Dark Slate Metallic for my 08 GS.

Has anyone thought of trying the Adventurer screen?

Never ridden a stock GS only a GSA for 53,000 miles with no buffeting or wind noise:augie. It really is perfect.

This is the other option I am considering as lots of people have gone this route with success.

The problem is it is bloody expensive. I asked SBW Motorrad in Hertford for a quote to fit the adventure screen plus winglets and also Park Lane. They both came in in excess of £400!

By the way, I love the paint job on your bike!

Looks great in black. Is that the original appearance or was the bike resprayed?

Cheap fix

Fitted redundant Shoei visor by home made clamps to top end of standard 1150 screen, raked screen adjustment back to maximum, air flows up between visor & screen, six footer & worked for me, buffeting gone proved itself on 1500mls trip to France & back, don't feel like my neck has been wrung & have no muscle pain as before.

Flowjet - pricey but worth it!

I run the Wunderlich on my bike in summer, standard GSA screen in winter. No turbulence, no problems.

I'm just not into the 'barn door look' of the extra tall screens.

Hi

Looks good.

How much did the Adventure screen cost you?

Opti

It was pricey, I believe around $175. Now that I have it, I'd say it's worth it. Having more air flowing around me in summer is a life saver here in Georgia and the surrounding southern states.

-edit-
Just realized you asked about the adventure screen... Well, it cost me nothing since it came with the bike :-)

Thanks.
The previous owner bought it new in black-must be a BMW option but I've not seen many. Must admit as soon as I saw it I was hooked.

Get the MRA Vario Maxi screen.I have it and loves it.It is adjustable in hight.

Ah, didn't realise you had the GSA! :blast

I suffer enourmously from screen turbulence noise, even with latest and greatest Schuberth C2. Have had the yellow foam plugs as long as i can remember. I'm 6.5 and can not ride w/o earplugs. I have a 06 1200GS, and it doesn't matter where i put the screen, although lowest is the 'best'. Dealer gave me a K1200GT for the weekend (we get along well..), same problem whatever the wind screen position.
And I finally bought/received (expensive!) UltimateEar Monitors from Dave, and although they solve some of my noise problem (altough expensive these go into my best ever purchase list), i now have my teeth into the i-want-music bit, and got even more upset with this turbulence.
So now i have cut down my screen as detailed elsewhere on the net (look for "screen surgery"), have tilted it further back with tie wraps sofar, not torbinators), AND have raised my already optional high BMW saddle by nearly 40mm (38 in the end) by using a 40x20mm aluminium bars. Haven't worked this out but must be 78mm higher than std BMW saddle in high position. This works great for me. I'm halfway between tip-toe and feet flat on the ground, driving position is more "sports bike" leaning more forward really helping the lower back, and leg angle while driving is nearly 90 degrees. AND I'm clear of this screen turbulence - it hits my shoulders but that's fine with me. Really helps too on pants as they take up less lenght around the knees, and thus don't go up that far above the ankles. And as for anti theft, 99% of the planet's population won't be able to get it into my saddle :-)

Took me a while to decide to do this - but man i'm happy i did. If you don't need two feet flat on the ground, this is the way to go. You'll need the high saddle as a base though, as the only difference between the BMW saddles is the foam filling, the plastic panel underneath is the same. Putting up the std saddle might work, but won't look good.

Best part sofar has been pulling up to local police on BMW RT bikes - and looking down on them :-)...

Any details / pictures on how you did this? Wouldn't mind raising my standard saddle a bit more from the 'high' position to give a bit more leg room.

Hi Opti,

sorry no earlier reply just got back from holiday. Yes I am still pleased with it, I may go back to standard screen at some point (winter?) but I'm keeping the Flowjet. Would consider getting it sprayed the same colour as side panels but it matches the hand-guards quite well.
