I dont seem to have had much luck with my BMW shock absorber, i'm on my second one and dont feel inclined to buy another as i'm told poor seal quality is quite common with them nowadays! Has anybody any experience of Hagon units? its on a 93 R80GS (2 up n' loads of luggage)
thanks,
Jim

You might get a responce if you put this in the Airheads section. Its an interesting question that should generate some replies, which as a newbie myself with a 93 R80GS I would be glad to see.

Cheers

HAGON

Not had one on an Airhead however, I have got one on an 1100RT. On July 15th this year it failed (damping oil loss). This was just four days before the end of the 2 year Warranty. Phoned Hagon and without quibbling they asked me to send it back with the proof of purchase. It was perfectly rebuilt and back in my hands within 4 days.

Top service

Search for my other posts on the subject for "Hagons", and you will find an "interesting" story !

Hagons

Just purchased a pair for my R80.
Absolutely no problem what so ever; more than happy.
The only two reasons I would have fitted genuine BMs are, I had more money, or concourse rebuilds.
I ride my bikes, so more than happy with the Hagons.
If my GS Airhead needed a new rear shock, I'd certainly consider and probably get an Hagon:thumb2

my direct experience of hagon twin shocks, is that they are very good performers, very reliable, but perhaps a little plain looking.

the amount of anecdotal evidence i've seen here detailing failures of their monoshocks, often repeated failures, means that i would never buy one. ever.

I have the twin dampers on my Guzzi and they are fine. I have had monos on a 1200 Bandit and two 100GS all were much better than the goosed originals. I had no failures but didn't do offroad or huge miles.

I put a Hagon shock into my 1990 100GS and I have been extremely pleased with it. I have used the bike off-road and when on-road I drive at a brisk pace :augie and have not had any problems....it did help to have Ian Duffus set it up for me though.

I've got a Hagon on my '92 R100GS. It seems to work perfectly well as far as I can tell, absolutely no complaints performance wise and not a hint of oil loss or anything, but the finish on it rotted off in three years flat and I've had to strip it, powder coat the spring and re-spray the body.

Admittedly the bike doesn't get pampered - it's in regular use all year and might get cleaned once or twice a year if its lucky, so the shock is covered in mud / salt etc for much of the time. I suppose it depends on what how you use the bike, but I'd like to hope that a shock for a rugged bike would cope with winter use without requiring a clean every time out. Or maybe I was just unlucky and got one with a duff finish?

Any comments on how the finish on Ohlins / WP / Wilbers etc survive the winter salt?

Cheers.

My PD came with a chromed Hagon shock but as I wanted something built and set for me I bought a new Ohlins sprung and valved for my lithe figure so the Hagon came off and lived on a shelf but instead it went on for 3 separate periods whilst the Ohlins was removed for servicing once, repair once and stripped down for blasting and powder coating as the paint couldn't cope with a running through Winter, didn't affect the shocks performance but when you pay £500 you expect something to be well built and that includes the paint.

The 'spare' and little used Hagon will be up for sale shortly :thumb

I have used a few pairs of Hagon shocks. Although they offer good initial value, they are and always will be a budget shock manufacturer.

In my experience they are initially very good shocks. However quite quickly they settle down into a pretty mediocre shock 'reliably Medicare'.

If you want to tour two up ( just want a proper shock) I would recommend having your BM shock rebuilt by Falcon Shocks. I had Jill's BM (Showa) shock by them in preference to buying a Hagon because he will completely rebuild it with new good quality parts custom made as necessary.

Give him a call, he does a full postal service, and the cost is about half the cost of the budget shock. you won't regret it :D
