halfords 10/40 oil

Buying oil for my 1150 GSA...

just spoken to a salesman in Halfords trying to tell me the 10/40 semi synthetic 4 stroke own brand car engine oil cant be used in bikes and i must use the motorcycle 10/40 semi synthetic oil as it is better in wet clutches

so i bought the 10/40 semi synthetic 4 stroke engine oil for cars

i really have heard it all now.
 
Why should he know?

putting 'bike' oil in a boxer isnt a problem. putting car oil in a more traditional bike can be a big problem.

he did the the right thing - erred on the side of caution.

Had a salesman challenged me i would have answered - its fine. my bike is designed much like a car - bike oil is a waste of money. thank you for your concern. paid for it and left.

He could well be right. The additive 'package' they put in a motorcycle oil is likely to be be different. For instance the amount and type of friction modifiers.

which is what i did
this is the same shop that tried to tell me that standard power steering fluid was absolutely what I needed for my Jeep. Duff advice.

Halfords classic oil 20 50 is API SE rated, I believe the R1150 should have API SF or later
 
I've had my '53 1150GS from new and done ~89,000 miles. Commuting, touring, track days, off roading, the lot.

Once out of warranty it has had Halfords own brand 10W40 in it's veins most of the time.

Recently I saw some great prices on bulk oils from Opie Oils, mail order, and switched to Millers.

The bike doesn't seem to mind, my wallet is happy hence so am I.

And 10w40 is not a great choice for an 1150 in summer either.
 
20w-50w oil for me. Just did a service to mine last week. Previous owner put 10w-40w in and it is way smoother and quieter now. Also seemed to use a bit of oil on 10w-40w, in my previous experiences with the 1150's, 20w-50w uses hardly any.

Picked up some nice millers 20w-50w at the weekend for £16 ready for the next oil change.
 
If I was going into Europe I'd use different oil but summer in the UK 10-40 is fine, especially up here in Scotland.

as long as the ambient temp doesn't go over 20°C.

so all ok for scotland at least then, i would have thought :P
