Thanks to Steptoe's over the phone diagnostics it appears that my Hall Sensor (1999 R1150GS) may need replacing (I know it was last December Steptoe but I've only just got round to sorting this!).

Anyway, I know there was a post on here some time ago with a part number listing from Motorworks but I can't find the bleedin' thing. Anyone able to post a link to it or provide the part number? Think it worked out around a ton (ouch!), haven't checked how much Mr. BWM wants yet...

Cheers in anticipation.

Have you checked the small cables going to hall sensor mounting bracket?

I've read some reports where the wires have been "tired" due engine heating/cooling so the just the solder places need resoldering and it works again.

The diagnostics should tell you which hall sensor malfunctions as well.

I'd check those wired myself with tester first before buying the new hall sensors.

If you take the sensor frame off you need to mark it's exact position (i.e. cut the markings around it into crankcase) so if you put it back it's in the right position again. Otherwise you'll have wrong ignitioning time (too early or too late, whether it'll be "pinking" or loss of power) engine works more like shiite.

Hmmm, hadn't thought of that as I'm a technical numpty. Truth be told, don't even know where or what the hall sensor is! Basically, bike starts fine, runs for about 20 mins and then dies. Then turns over fine but won't fire at all, almost like it's empty of fuel. After about an hour it starts fine and then repeats the cycle. A mixture of a month overseas, a heavy workload and the loan of a mate's 1200GS has delayed getting round to doing anything about it. Steppers suggested the hall sensor as a likely culprit (but over the phone and from my garbled description of the problem!!!)

Thought about getting it on a diagnostics thingy but frightened of what BWM would charge and how accurate the diagnosis would be.

Are you sure it's the hall sensor? I say that 'cos I had a similar problem with my 1100 some years ago and it was the engine temperature sensor (or rather the wiring to it) that was u/s and basically the ecu was running the bike fully enriched as if teh engine was cold. Once the engine really warmed up, it just lost power and died. After it cooled down, it would start and run as if nothing was the matter..... until .....

The only other clues I had were an erratic temperature display and a sooty exhaust.

Worth checking as I fixed mine by locating the connector in the wiring loom (under the tank) and cleaning it thoroughly.
