Hi, Ive got a big trip coming up and I've noticed my 1100GS feeling lumpy at idle sometimes.

Hi, Ive got a big trip coming up in a few weeks and Ive noticed my '95 plate 1100 GS feeling lumpy at idle. It may need the fuel system balancing but I have heard horror stories of Hall sensor failure. Do these just go and its a binary issue or are there tell tale signs its on the way out ? Thanks in advance,
Steve

pops and bangs , then runs just fine .
sometimes sounds like frying bacon when you turn it on.

the HES , is sending signals to the ecu at the wrong time , which makes the bike fuck about .
pull the belt cover and inspect the wiring , if it is original , it may be falling to bits , and cross firing , hence the pops and bangs.

2 different plugs for different bikes
look at the side bar pictures

not the cheapest ( buy cheap buy twice )

had a couple off of him , trustworthy .

fluctuating rev counter, then it just stops, leave it 15 mins and it will go again if your lucky for another few miles

Just buy one of Greek Johns off E bay and fit it and have done with

1100GS "should" be the flat six connection

BUT Check it before you order !

P.S. sticky Enter key ???

Hi Steve,

First of all, to answer your question directly: it can be both, but more often than not, it gives you some very specific "tell-tale" signs before it completely quits on you.
Since @theoneandonly kindly mentioned me above (yes, I am "Greek John" / Fotis, formerly on eBay!), I’ve spent years building and testing these units, so here is what you should look out for regarding Hall Effect Sensor (HES) failure symptoms on the R1100/R1150 Oilheads:
1. The "Heat-Sensitive" Cut Out:
This is the most common early sign. The bike runs perfectly fine when cold, but once the engine reaches full operating temperature (or gets hot in traffic), it suddenly shuts off as if you hit the kill switch. Once the bike cools down for 20–30 minutes, it starts right back up and runs normally until it gets hot again.
2. The Dancing Rev Counter:
If your tachometer (rev counter) needle starts jumping up and down erratically or flickers wildly while the engine stumbles, that is a textbook sign that the ECU is receiving scrambled or intermittent signals from a degrading sensor.
3. Moisture & Rain Trigger:
The factory wiring insulation on these older years degrades and turns into powder over time inside the outer sheath. When you wash the bike or ride in heavy rain, moisture gets in, shorts the bare wires, and causes popping, banging, or a complete shutdown.
Since you have a big trip coming up on a '95 plate, if the HES is still the original factory one, the internal wiring insulation is almost certainly brittle by now. It’s highly recommended to inspect it or swap it before a long journey for peace of mind.
As a quick update for the community here, I recently moved away from eBay due to their unsustainable seller fees, and I’ve launched my own store: boxerhallsensors.com.
The quality is exactly the same premium standard with upgraded heat-resistant wiring, but because I am independent now, I can offer a 5-Year No-Questions-Asked Warranty. I’ve also set up a dedicated coupon code UKGSER for a discount at checkout.
Have a great trip, and if you need any technical advice on testing your current unit before you leave, just let me know!

Ride safe,
Fotiοs

I’ve had more than a few hall sensor failures where the bike will idle perfectly, all day long if you wanted it to ..
But the slightest touch of the throttle and the engine stops instantly..
The first bike I had in with this problem took me a while to find the fault was with the hall sensor .. and only then after changing almost everything. Put on a spare sensor (out of desperation and being in the position of having a spare of most parts :D) and Bobs your uncle, problem fixed.. the other bikes that appeared with the same problem took me 5 minutes to diagnose :D
