Hi there all you GS'ers, have an early model r1200gs, first beemer i have owned, we're gettin on fine thanks, ha ha. Having been used to the smoothness of an inline four for so many years was'nt too sure what was acceptable by way of vibration but the vibes thro the bars at about 4k seemed a bit excessive. Did a bit of internet searching, people recommending anti vibe risers etc. It seems the tapered bars are'nt particularly weighty, hence the vibes are transmitted through quite easily. Try this for a reasonably cheap fix. Took the bars off and they have a hole drilled in them in the centre underneath between the clamps, rest them in a vice and fill the bars up with fishing shot, I used old fishing weights cut up with a pair of pliers into bits small enough to put into the hole, took a while and I needed to take the bars out of the vice frequently to shake the bits down into the bars, (I used a small rubber grommet from a car accessory shop to bung the hole). The difference when re-fitted is un-believeable! What a transformation, this must have taken 90% of the vibes out of the bars. It rides like a different bike. I can't recommend this fix highly enough. Hope someone out there finds this useful. Cheers.
