Handy aux power socket location

I bought a heated waistcoat for Mandy during the week. Thanks Thunder. It is a Chili and is fitted with a BMW type plug.

It would be pretty awkward for Mandy to use the standard socket on the 1150 so I had a wee look around today to see where would be a handy spot to add an additional socket.

A quick look confirmed that there was enough space for the body of the socket so I decided to put it here;

An 18mm hole was drilled out to take the unit then the cable was fed through the hole. I put some coloured heatshrink over the terminals just to remind me which was which then connected the socket.

Next step was to route the cable towards the fuse box. I had removed the tool tray earlier so it was just a matter of running the cable along the subframe.

I fitted an inline fuse to the live wire and then tapped into No 5 fuse (horn) so that there is power to the socket only while the ignition is on. Next step was to test that the socket worked. I have a little compressor which I plugged in. It worked fine.

Finally I re-fitted the tool tray and the seats. This location for the power socket should be much easier for Mandy to use and took less than an hour to do.

Don't get putting anything too heavy it that top box now will ya, hasn't that just removed 50% of the 'meat' from the left hand rear rack support?

The socket is a snug fit in the hole lads so it shouldn't make much difference I would have thought.

Generally I only really ever use the top-box when Mandy is with me anyway and try to keep most of the weight lower down in the panniers rather that high up and hanging out over the back of the bike.

I reckon you would have to have some serious weight in the box before you would be in danger of doing any harm. I usually carry bags of cement etc in the boot of the car.

I had a plug and socket in the garage Speedo but can't remember where I got them. Any good motor factors should have them in stock or anywhere that stocks stuff for trucks.

Maplins should have them too at a fraction of the price BMW would charge you.

I got one a while back that's the BM type. Piggy backs the one by your left foot. IIRC around £25 including the socket and wiring

Nice job Aidan, I think I'll go with something similar, I want power to my
"topbox" for the beer-cooler.
About weakening the casting, I doubt very much it will cause you any problems.
If the cross-section of material between rider and pillion is strong enough to support
a typical tosser pillion then the section minus the hole you've drilled is plenty for at
least 1 cement bag. I wouldnt worry about it.

power socket available at BMW dealers, they used to be fitted to the K100RS around 1990 vintage, these are good quality sockets that use spade terminals, make sure you order a cover/cap at the same time. There are a lot of budget crap sockets out there with silly caps and cheaply made.
Also dont get the later type as fitted to R1150 GS ADV. etc as these req. a special plug.
