Hard drive recovery tools?

i have a buffalo 1 TB external drive that was working till someone (not me)left in the PC while doing a clean install

It now won't format properly and come up with an error message

is there any other tools out there other than in vista that may tell me more about what's wrong or help reformat the beast

Tried that still no good i also plugged it in and removed my main drive and tried to run a fresh install of Windows thinking it would format the drive before the install but it wouldn't do it... it was telling me to replace drive as it might fail

if you can wait till I fire up the big PC I used a programme to recovery info from a buggered external drive that had been reformatted and still wouldn't read/write properly.

I think the programme maybe called Recovery 6 ?

The programme I used was called Easy Recovery Professional, you need the equivalent amount of space to the amount your trying to recovery on another drive for this programme to work, but
it an effective wee programme
