I don’t feel inclined to pay for the BMW panniers. Has anyone fitted any other manufacturers panniers to their bike and if so what are their thoughts. Shad are an obvious one as they are the manufacturer for BMW.

My 1300 GS has the full Shad Terra panniers and top box with the 4P mounting systems. They are well made panniers and top box and I believe that Nippy Normans sell a rebadged version called Wunderlich X case I think, but worth going direct to Shad. Black or silver finish and solid piece of kit, my only grips is they are side loading, but that’s a personal thing.

I fitted the Shad sh35 panniers with the 3p mounting system. When the panniers are not on the mounting system doesn't stand out. The are 35lts per side and seem well made. They have alley panels that match well with the frame. Cost wise including the fitting kit was about £423. I think the oe ones were in the region of £1250.

More practical than the SW Motech Blaze in terms of capacity.
Some photos of the Shad mounting system on the bike and also with the panniers fitted would be good if you can ;-)
TIA

I’ve ordered the Shad mounting kit ( which was not in stock ) and I’ve ordered the 36ltr panniers as the 35ltr doesn’t take a helmet. In the past I’ve always had BMW luggage, but these won’t get used as much and the one for the bike are crazy money for what they are and when the bike get sold they won’t add that value to it. These obviously won’t “look” as good as the BMW but I can spend the money on enjoying riding the bike.

@N1Rat, while I was writing this, you've ordered the Shad :) . My comments below may help others.......

I have the Givi V37 panniers and inner liners with the quick release mechanism for the frame. I only have panniers on for overnight trips and it takes 5-10 minutes to fit the frame two or three times a year. When the frames are off, one would be hard-pressed to notice the vestigial mounts that remain fixed to the machine. I have enough space in the garage to store the frames and boxes when they're off.
They're not the largest panniers, but I manage two week solo trips with them and a top-box. Like most Givi's you cannot lock or un-lock without a key, but I can put up with that for 6 weeks a year. They don't stick out as far as on some of the adventure bikes with ally boxes.
Givi supply an extra lock barrel with the V37s (and the V35's, no doubt) to enable me to recode the top-box as well as that never leaves the bike. I absolutely detest carrying my helmet around and refuse to hang it by its strap to the bike.
I was never going to cough up for the BMW 30 litre top-box, as I'm used to a 56 and 58 litre Givi's so why should I go for the BMW panniers?

Shad make some plastic panniers for BMW but not all.

I don't think one brand is better than the other when it comes to hard luggage. I might well have chosen Shad if I was not a long-time Givi user.
