Bought a set of adv panniers for a trip that is planned in August, budget is tightish and dont really want to spend nearly four hundred quid on a top box.
Does anyone have an opinion on soft luggage as opposed to a top box or am i being a miserable git, any ideas welcome.

Cheers in advance, salty:hide

As far as I'm concerened a lot of it's down to preference. I like the ease of use and security of the hard luggage, and never worry about leaving it on the bike. With soft luggage there always more of a chance it can get knicked or cut into.
Also it depends how often you're going to use it, Soft luggage isn't as durable, although these days they're pretty darn good if you don't buy the cheap stuff. It's not as easy to clean soft luggage and so can look pretty crappy after just a short period of time.
Just my two-penneth worth :thumb2

I prefer using a 'bag' across the back 'cos I can get more in it and it looks more 'hardcore' ;) but the lovely Amanda prefers the top box as it makes her feel more secure when sat on the back.

You really can't beat Givi for price/quality/capacity and overall smugness over dearer/inferior boxes. I'm seriously thinking of replacing my original vario topbox for a Givi on the grounds that it's shaped to take two full face lids and more luggage. I've always found their luggage to be well put together, you won't regret buying it.

I've got a topbox, but still use a Ortlieb roll bag when camping. You get loads in them and can use them for all the long stuff.

Givi top boxes etc are always cropping up on ebay.

You may get a bargain:augie

Depends on you, how much you have to spend and whether you're posing or actually travelling.

Deep down, only you will know the answer

Givi top box mounts snap at the point where they attach just above the rear light. Well, mine has anyway. Pig to fix (I assume, as i've not bothered yet). This can be caused by overloading, so be careful if going down that route. I prefer soft bags on the back for trips, although the wife likes the Givi with backrest when riding together.

Givi have a new rack to avoid this problem - the SR684 is the old one and the SR689 is the improved version :thumb

Looks like the new one means having to remove the grab rails. At some point in the future I'm going for an ally top box....to fit out for carrying a DSLR, which should fit directly onto the BMW rack. I'm thinking of making one up myself. The Givi has been useful but in all honesty, unless touring it's a bit big for day to day stuff. And it looks shit.

There are small grab handles built into the mounting kit - not fitting mine until holiday time in July though, so I don't know how she'll get on with them.
