Need some advice. Just got eTrex Legend and am trying to hard wire it to my GS with the Garmin car power lead. I was planning on soldering two wires inside the connector/transformer and soldering them to the tabs on the inside of the power socket on the bike then concealing the whole Garmin plug either behind the plastic cover at the power socket or under the seat. Is this the right idea or is there an easier way. I know I have to keep the Garmin socket more or less in tact as it contains a transformer but I do want a tidy and reliable connection without using cigarette type plugs.

Any ideas?

Today purely by coincidence I have just completed the mod you refer to!

Straight onto the back of the Power Socket and as long as you turn the GPS Unit off you'll be fine.

You could fit an inline fuse aswell!

How did you secure the Garmin cigarette type plug...under seat or behind side panel?

I made up a lead with an accessory socket, plug one end to a cig lighter type socket (available from Touratech) the other end, long enough to reach a suitable cubby hole under the seat. I then plugged the Garmin adapter into that and ran the cable under the petrol tank up to the handlebars.

You can use this guy, he has units with bare wires on one end, I have used this unit when I used to have and Etrex Summit .
