Is it me or are soft panniers making a massive comeback? I reckon the R&D & marketing depts are rebranding them as I see them pictured everywhere. In fact just had a message from a company on Facebook to beta test some too.

In the US you can buy rebranded soft panniers from BMW for the GSA.

I'm using soft panniers on my round the world trip - i love them. Mosko Moto
Versatile, light, padding in case of a drop.

Not the roomiest or as multifunctional as alu, but they get a thumbs up from me.

I noticed that "sprocket". Any issues with security when you park up?
P.S. following your vlogs and enjoying the ride along - safe and amazing travels to you my friend.

Thanks buddy.

Luckily none so far. I have a cable lock which goes neatly through the bracket so they can't be removed.
Then I have a travel size padlock on each buckle so they cant be opened.

If someone is a thief, they'll have tools, they'll get in anything. For the opportunist, this will slow them down.
To be honest it's more about having streetwise skills of where to leave it, and adding a few bob a night on my airbnb/hotel to get somewhere with secure parking.
When I camp it's right next to my tent :)

Melting issues? :nenau

There are certainly times when I'd like a box pannier to use as a stool, strap an extra bottle to etc, but then other times I think - wow i'm so glad i dont have massive heavy boxes.

Like everything with bikes - luggage, tyres, protection - it must be tailored to you. There is no 'right answer', just the gear that's suited for your ride.
My main deciding point was repair. Going down in far off exotic countries (which I will, there is no doubt) means a rigid system could crack, making field repair harder.
With soft ones a rip or a tear is somewhat easier. Rack cracks can always have a bit of JB Weld.

Was there any damage to the soft panniers on your minor 'off' a couple of weeks ago?

On a similar topic I note you (Sprocket) have a SW Motech tank bag. Is it any good?

Ride safe

Neil

HI Neil, yes I just replied to your thread. I love it. It's the powered one which i recommend, doddle to fit.
And by 'doddle' I mean once you replace the tank panels you'll likely have 2 spare screws - so don't be like me in a rush and keep an eye on what comes off :)

The last one was about pannier size, and a vote about which is the prefered size. I think it was 31,38,42 litre. I went for 38 (8" wide) versus the 41 which we 11.5" wide and equivilent to the touratech metal panniers.

No point having a fabric pannier as wide as a metal one.
