Hi Everyone

a friend is thinking of buying an HD XLH 883 which is advertised on Gumtree, http://www.gumtree.com/p/harley-dav...ter-100th-year-anniversary-edition/1103738039 and would like some advice on whether the bike is worth the asking price and if there are any known issues he needs to be aware of before buying the machine.

I am concerned that the bike is advertised as an HD Sportster when the HPI check identifies it as an HD XLH Roadster, 883cc. The engine has been converted to 1200cc, is this normal and if so are there any pitfalls with the conversion and should the V5 reflect the change in engine capacity.

Any advice and pointers on what to look for when buying a used HD would be appreciated

Feel the fear and do it anyways.
Nothing in life lasts forever, just like us.....That's about as much advice as I would ever give to anyone, if that ain`t good enough or expected, then cotton wool can be bought in bulk:beerjug:

The 2003 Anniversary colour scheme was two tone black and silver. So this may not be a genuine 100th aniv bike. It is a Sportster Roadster, but might not be shown on the V5 as such, and shown by its model code XLH Roadster. The info from the HPI check will probably be a lift from the V5.
Cant say much about the big bore conversion but it is quite a common mod. I would ask the seller if he had receipts for all work carried out to the engine and if its had a respray.

That is a standard 100th paint option, I'd also bet quite strongly that it's a grey import from the USA... The side reflectors on Harleys normally give them away..

1200 conversions are common, but it should have been re-registered technically speaking.......

100th anniversary models seem to carry a premium for some unknown reason....

Personally.... I'd look out for a UK spec genuine 1200.... Loads out there.....

Sportsters are pretty bomb proof... But like all Harleys enjoy quality Oil every 5,000 miles....check the condition of the belt.... And that's about it....

Why don`t you fuck off to a more specific forum for HD and bore them with your friends predicament, we see too much of this shit in other sections on this website, which appears to be festooned with Nigels, Timothy`s and fucking Quentins....This section is for people who are actually able to make a decision for themselves, not on behalf of some ill gotten bum bandit.
Now, please forgive me, but just fuck off and stay fucked off.
No need to thank me for the warm welcome, you are welcome:beerjug:

Who lit the fuse on your Tampon ?

If you've got nothing constructive to say keep it zipped and crawl back behind your keyboard.

It's idiots like you who spoil the forum for everyone else in particular those who have taken the time to read the post and respond with some useful advice

I bet you wouldn't have the guts to tell me to fuck off to my face.

If he likes it...buy it....if he doesn't...don't.... :P. You really, really need to ask whether the V5 should be correct? It's a Sporty...they sell all day long...if priced about right......and yes, I put £10 that he'd tell you to "fuck off" to your face....'it's you who comes across as the keyboard warrior.......

One more thing? If its been converted to 1200.... Find out EXACTLY what's been done....and using whose parts.....

"If he likes it buy it" that's precisely why I asked the question in the first place. My policy is to buy with my brain rather than my heart. I posed the question as I'm unfamiliar with HD and potential pitfalls with them.

As for ATT not only did he not offer any sound advice he was just plain obnoxious.

Well...in my opinion...if we didn't buy a 'bike with the heart....we'd all be riding around on UJMs......and no, that's not being obnoxious......ATT offered some VERY sound advice....if you're interested in the trivia between models...go seek help off those who sweat the details.....not in here, where people, quite frankly, don't give a flying fuck about " buying with the head". Take a good look at some of the " choosing a bike" threads in here...
