A GPS can hardly replace a map, not unless you want someone else to plan your route for you (Autorouting). You simply can't plan "your" route without looking at a map and a GPS screen only gives you a 1% view of it. Besides, I never plan my route. I do it while on the road, otherwise I might as well get on a tour bus.

I use my GPS to record the route I've taken. I keep a daily log of my tours. In the past I've used my memory which never failed me yet. The GPS just makes life a bit easier now.

I use it to calibrate my speedometer.

I use it to determine what direction I took a photograph in, so that I can identify the mountain range in the background, once again, by using a map. I also "mark" photo locations in remote areas.

I've used it once or twice to lead me somewhere.

And it also tells me what time it is.

An amusing toy.
