Mine did last week, and all the indications were the rectifier or the alternator (engine just died after a 25 mile high-speed run, clock reset itself, horrible death rattle on the starter, battery not charging etc). I was not a happy camper, especially as the alternator is only 12 months old. Turned out the polybelt had split, despite being changed 10,000 miles ago. Not sure what the moral of all of this is but at least BMW have dealt with the replacement costs as a warranty job!

You can ride the 11xxGS for a while with a busted poly belt but the battery isn't charging then so after some time it will die. I'm a bit surprised you didn't notice the belt was broken before the bike died. Didn't you hear anything untoward or smell burning rubber ? :nenau Maybe you had earplugs in your ears and up your nose :D

Did they inspect the alternator drive pulleys for damage?.
A duff pulley will shred a belt well before its time.
Might be worth checking the belt in 5000 miles time.
(or before any long trip).
