Hate macs? Have a look at this from todays Guardian... it may bring you a smile

Just by chance I found this - another view of Mac's

http://www.orbital-one.co.uk/Humour/Mac.htm

Warning - NWS towards the end as he does cuss a bit.

I think he must have used the Powermac I used to do Quark layouts on.

On the same site there are 'techno' versions of "Calm down it's only a commercial" and the "Cillit bang" ad. Silly but amusing.

Grisoft AVG. Not had a problem with net nasties since installing this and it's free!

Can't quite believe the passion this thread has aroused or its global reach - must mean something - would be nice to have a CSI team take a peek under the veneer.

In the Mr Men books Mr Tickle is known for his mischievious nature (and far-reaching hands): not sure what our own mrTickle has catalysed with this thread!

it comes around about anually - all the same stuff......

This thread's just about fizzled out, but what about Apple's new iPhone, anybody got any strong views either way on that one? Guess it'll take a while before they're shipped over here, but some well-travelled GSers might get an early preview on their travels. It looks quite bulky in the promo shots.

Either way, you get owned. (iPod/iTunes users will testify to that!).

Straining to see how I am "owned" by a clear, simpe and completely reliable bit of software that puts music in my ears and vid in my eyes exactly when and how I want it?:nenau

'owned' is a modern term for young people under 20 yrs age.

i think it means you've been had, old chap.

in reference to the fact that you HAVE to use itunes to load vids onto an ipod - then maybe ?

music ? - no way

I guess it's whatever you're happy with really. An iPod would be no good for me for instance, because I want to able to attach my mp3 player plug'n'play into any old computer (mac or pc :D ) at any old time without needing any proprietary software, and transfer and play any old files I want whenever I want with no DRM or any other issues. There is no reason why you shouldn't be able to do this with an iPod*, in fact my non-Apple mp3 player uses the exact same hard drive that Apple uses in iPods and it does all those things. Actually there is a reason - it's because Apple has disabled this default inherent functionality in it's iPods via the firmware because they want you locked into using iTunes and a limited number of audio/video formats in order that they can then sell you media via their own distribution channels, and no-one elses. Much like Sony and their recent exploits in DAP-land, they're trying to control your spending behaviour and limit your choices to their own advantage - or if you're under 20, OWN you :P Doesn't bother some (most?) - but I personally prefer to be able to choose what I can and can't do with my equipment, and from whom I buy my music.

* Actually you can

Why does anyone need a dedicated mp3 player these days? My phone does the 20 albums of music thing :)

i'm trying to restrain myself, but its no use.... :mmmm

So you mean that in order to get your iPod to work properly you have to install more software? On every computer you want to use it on? Feck that - bottom line is that behind that desirable, shiny casing the iPod is just a bog-standard harddrive, and I don't want to have jump through hoops to get it to work like one. Like I said, whatever floats your boat, and most people probably don't know / aren't that bothered anyway, but it's no for me.

exactly. i haven't bothered with an ipod in years... i always have my phone with me, and it has 25 (ish) albums on it.....ample..

it's one less gadget to keep charged, one less gadget to squeeze in the tiny space near my autocom, one less to insure, one less to upgrade every year etc. etc.

:bounce1

because 20 albums is nothing like enough variety for a decent random play.
Ooooh yes it is! ;) Just how much time do you spend listening to music!? :D If I really really want a random selection I can ask good old WINDOWS :D media player to make me one then wang (tech speak that is) it to me phone :thumb2

did the name apple stem from the beatles, ?

Wiki-ed it:

Apple — for the favourite fruit of co-founder Steve Jobs and/or for the time he worked at an apple orchard. Apple wanted to distance itself from the cold, unapproachable, complicated imagery created by other computer companies at the time — which had names such as IBM, DEC, Cincom and Tesseract — in order to get people to use them at home. They looked for a name that supported a brand positioning strategy that was to be perceived as simple, warm, human, approachable and different. Note: Apple had to get approval from the Beatle's Apple Corps to use the name 'Apple' and paid a one-time royalty of $100,000 to McIntosh Laboratory, Inc., a maker of high-end audio equipment, to use the derivative name 'Macintosh' ('Mac').

PC crashes still happen - my work Dell Precision blue-screened umpteen times at the end of last year. It got replaced by a PowerEdge running XP Pro - this one doesn't blue-screen, oh no, it just randomly re-starts (I've not been keeping count, but over a dozen times this year so far) - we've done Windows re-install, Windows repairs, we're now down to taking bits out and see if it fails again (no sound card at the moment).

My 5-year old home desktop PC seems to have thrown the dummy out since I moved to a laptop - it now freezes when trying to move files around. Plus I'd have to spend a fair bit of money to bring it up to date (32Mb AGP graphics card, SDRAM, Athlong XP2000 chip etc).

The flip side is that I've had a Dell Latitude laptop at home off eBay for about a year now, and no troubles whatsoever, and about the same for the Latitude I inherited at work when someone else upgraded :nenau I know that work has had issues with a lot of the Inspiron laptops they've bought though.
