Hats off to the Aberdeen guardians of the native red squirrel….

C'mon Sy, most Tossers will struggle with buttery! They winna kain fit a rowie is min! Nae a'body's fowk hail fae the Broch!
Ahaa the joy of different regional differences ,,,, we may have the Geordies chiming in wi things lik “ Stottie Cakes “ 😂

We're lucky, a healthy population of reds and no greys. We have two feed boxes in the garden and there is a steady stream of reds queuing up. Or, for the fat boss one, imposing his authority.

Pine Martens predate both, but the red has evolved with the Marten, and is lighter than the grey, so can go out further in the thinner branches and thus evade the PM...the reds also spend less time on the ground than their grey cousins. The greys in Ireland have been more or less eluminatedwhere the PM is spreading...as it is all over the UK. Mind you, the PM is eliminating other species as it spreads...notably the capercailzie.

I'm told that a family from the south moved to Aberdeen, and bought their semi tame greys up with them, starting the Aberdeen population.Fools, if true.

Anglesey is keeping the grey’s off the island. Come to think of it I don’t think I’ve ever seen a red squirrel in real life. I watch the grey’s around us planting plenty of conkers in the lawn though.

The big problem is that grey squirrels carry and spread a disease...squirrel para pox(?)..to which they are immune but kills red squirrels
