have a question about TDC when fitting HES sensor

Why do you need a TDC when fitting the HES, the plate can be fitted same position as the faulty one and the pully sets in same position, I am confused about this.
 
I guess it's all about setting the timing up etc.
Personally, I have just refitted a previous one in the exact position as the replacement. I marked how the old one was fitted, then transferred the mark to the new one. It all worked just fine.
 
Thank you for your input, thats what I was thinking, if you scribe marks from the old sensor and fit the new sensor there, and the pulley has fixed location, and the bike runs then you can take to a service for them to set the exact spark timing.

Went through the link Roger supplied above, gives info on the timing of hall sensor. Fixed bike, fired up first time , no issues. Thanks again for the link Roger.
