Have I Been Ripped Off??

Collecting my bike tomorrow - hopefully but I have just noticed price differences between what I've been charged and the BMW Motorrad Prices, Colours and Equipment 2008 brochure - printed 04/2008. For example...

Panniers, locks, fittings and top box - brochure = about £800, I've been charge £1000 inc 10% off discount.

Pillion back rest for top box - brochure = £50.50, I've been charged £57.

Akrapovic silencer - brochure = £495, I was quoted £517

Black tinted screen - brochure = £142, I've been charged £142.

I don't want to sound like a whiner but am I being ripped off or is this just inflation? I can't believe that I have been ripped off by a main dealer BUT if everything has gone up in price then how come when I ordered the screen from the brochure I get quoted and charged brochure prices but when I ordered my bike (days before) the calculation was done through their computer system which has inflated the prices compared to the catalogue!

I will be taking this up with the dealer but I expect them to fully justify the price hike one way or another! I'm going to contact a couple of other dealers first to get a second opinion but I can't believe the price of panniers and top box alone have really gone up £300 in 7 months in the same year!!!

You could ring up a couple of other dealers and see what prices they are charging as a comparison. Another factor to consider is that the prices could have gone up since the brochure was published.

Brochure lists the following...

1200 GS adventurer, price inc VAT but not fitting

Left Ali pannier = £240
Right ali pannier = £240
Cylinder locks for 2 pannier cases and top box = £45.70
Installation kit for pannier cases x6 = £91.20
Installation kit for top box x2 = 30.40
Top ali box = £247

TOTAL £894.30

Now I'm not sure about the following because the bike already came with the brackets / mountings for all cases as in the photo...

Left pannier mountings = £106
Right pannier mounting = £106
Cross bar = £28.80
Pannier mounting parts = £28.60
Top box mountings = £69.50
Top box mounting parts = £8.55

Total £347.45

This doesn't make any sense??

Maybe you're being ripped off as you come across as a pushover. A more worldly wise person would probably be in the showroom dragging the salesman across his desk by his tie asking for an explanation rather than whining on an Internet forum.
Buying a bike at this time of year and in this economic climate you could have negotiated a lot of those extras for free/cost/20% discount depending on your negotiating skills.

Yes I agree the price could have gone up but how come the screen hasn't gone up when I ordered that from the brochure??

By my comparison the pannier and top box kit should only come to £894 plus fitting, lets say 1 hour = another £70 = £964, but I was quoted £1100 less 10% = £1000. I guess I didn't really consider the fitting price - thought there wouldn't be a charge for that considering I'm buying a new bike and it would be a job lot price surely?

I can't fault the dealer for customer friendly service but I've not been impressed with how they have racked up the price on this purchase just by adding their labour rates here and there. Was told yesterday that the clock starts ticking when they start wheeling the bike into their workshop rather than from when it's in their workshop on the ramp!

Its the cost as a whole you have to look at.Once you start breaking it down it will piss you off but if you got the discount you wanted as I did dont think about each item .Get on it and Enjoy it,they are going up next year anyway

When I bought my GS, fitting was free for anything thing I bought for the bike. Alarm, crash bars, etc. The panniers just went on. I did pay for the locks being keyed.

Being charged for stuff already mounted is wrong. Not to mention them telling you the bit about as soon as the bike is wheel into the shop, it's on the clock. WTF? Thats like saying, hey, we are going to bleed you dry mate.

But, the main thing is to enjoy your Bike.

Yeah I def don't want to be whining but this is a good place to get info inwhich to make decisions. If I only spoke to saleman who seems quite riggid I wouldn't get very far so I need feedback to get a general idea of whether I've been taken for a ride or not!

When you come to sell the bike, remove all the extras and put them on eBay. Then some half brained numpty will come along and pay you more than new price for them. I've seen it happen time after time.

OK probably worrying over nothing, I've been told that there has been a fitting charge plus keying the locks which all takes time to do apparently.

Keying the locks doesn't take that long. It's the initial lock that takes a little bit of time, but once you have that done and you know which tumblers to use then the other 5 locks take no time at all.

Just had a quote from another dealer in London and was quoted £1110 fitted including locks coded. Asked if that was the best price and he said he would have to come back to me on that. So perhaps I've not been ripped off but dealer certainly has not done me any fantastic offers.

Never looks as good up close.... when you start breaking down the prices.

However, there will be different prices for different people.

I used to get silly mad priced deals on BMW's when in South Africa, here in the UK, I have yet to get the fuzzy warm feelings associated with buying from dealers... and there are some great people out there (SLM etc.)

However I guess it is about knowing the brand, market etc.

When I wanted to trade my 1150GS in quite a few years ago, two different dealers offered me plain insulting trade ins.

I hope that once the pain of the price goes away, you have an absolutely brilliant time with your bike, and get to be able to report back nothing but fun, pleasure and love for the bike and brand.

All that said, still do your homework on price, and be sure to look at 2nd hand bits, and specials when pimping the bike over time.

Bought a new 1200GS from Cooper Sunderland last month. I was given over £1000 off the price of the bike, change of paint foc and 10% of any extra equipment with free fitting. There are good deals to be had if you are do your homework and are ready to hold out for the best deal. Dont dwell on the cost, just enjoy the ownership!

Its always difficult to tell where the dealer is making the money by looking at individual prices........some won't discount the bike, but will the accessories, or give you more trade in - there's so many tunes they can play. The only real number is the £ you've got to take out of your bank to get your grubby hands on the bike of your spec. You need to know what you want and get quotes from a few dealers, then negotiate with the best.

I guess if you just go into one dealer and buy what you see - then yes, you may have been ripped off.

Its a buyers market for everything at the moment.

Thats been my mistake. I was planning to buy a 09 GS or GSA next spring but was tempted by the offer Plymouth have at the moment = £500 off and the fact that they said prices were going up next year and there are no changes to the model at all, not even colour! I did however get what I was asking for to be honest = £600 off, free 1st service, 10% off panniers and top box and have yet to see if they will fill the tank up because they only promised £15 worth of fuel and I wanted a full tank. O by the way I did not trade anything in but that didn't seem to get me any better deal either!

Looking back what I should have done is to get my bike and accessories in order then shop for the best price between dealers but it didn't happen that way and I did not get the best price it would seem as other dealers have given more away. I will learn from this for next time.
