Just got a new laptp wth windows xp on it

what do i need to do to get over this problem........i have a streetpilot 3

I believe the card reader is usb connection.
This used for loading map data to the data cards.
The serial connection is used for routes, tracks and waypoints.

There was a problem a while back with xp not finding this type of connection but I believe it was fixed in xp service pack 1.
If it is a newish laptop it should have the service packs installed, check and see.

Try a different usb port, sometimes works.

Streetpilot is a serial only device, not USB, the card programmer is a USB device, to install the drivers first install the mapsource software then reboot and plug in the USB programmer, Windows will find the device and prompt for the #1 CD for the driver, then it will work, you can then update Mapsource to the latest version and the USB drivers will be updated also BUT they have to be installed at the CD version first.

To use the serial connection you can get a USB to Serial device for about £6.00 from Ebuyer or Teckheads and connect the serial adaptor to a USB port.

I suspect there is more to this than meets the eye as I have never known XP to crash to the blue screen of death unless there is something very wrong.

sorted....
gps genie mike o has just talked me through downloading the software updates of the garmin site....
and it all works....
just need to get a serial/usb converter.........

thanks for all of your help......
