hi all, just picked up a 1200gs so new to all this, only problem so far is head lamp has packed up! any ideas? this may sound daft but when i turn on the ignition for 3 seconds the word CHECK! is displayed then it goes out is this normal.

ps i love the bike

I'm assuming the engine is started?

Dip and main beam?

Giz a clue mate?

Welcome

Check indicator is normal for a few secs after ignition turn on.
You should see LAMPF on display to match a problem with your front lights - bear in mind this includes the 3rd bulb (the parking/sidelight)

Also you have started the bike - dipped beam will only be on after starting, not just on ignition operation - you won't see LAMPF for this...

Try swapping the bulbs from one side to the other to help you work out whether it is bulb or wiring that is causing your lights issue.

Oh but take care with the spring clips that secure the bulbs in the housings - the right hand(dipped) side is fiddly to seat correctly and if you get it wrong the bulb will be loose in the holder.

Also don't push too hard into the housing as I believe some owners have had the inner housing jump off it's adjuster causing problems with headlight alignment.

it does say LAMPF on display i will play with bulbs, many thanks :thumb

If they're both off, maybe the wiring connector has come adrift?

:nenau

That a good thought - to help with that:

This image shows the complete light unit with some annotations. The Lights connector is not noted but is between the "Up-Down Adjustment" and the "Parking Light Hole"

It is worth re-seating the connector as per Mr K comment - bear in mind the connector has a clip that needs squeezing to release the plug.

This image is a picture on bike and slightly less clear - showing the connectors disconnected

For info the Console connector position is shown in the first image, the left hand bump on the back of the Instrument Cluster.

many thanks to you all, i think its the bulbs.

very helpfull chaps, great to be amongst you

Hi,

If its the low beam bulb, check the retainer for the bulb. My 07 GSA got a LAMPF and after replacing the bulb, it went 3 weeks later.

It turned out the retainer for the bulb had either got damaged through vibration or possibly heat - BMW replaced the whole lamp unit (luckily I was under warranty). It was fine after that. Those retainers are not of the best build quality - a bit "plasticky".

Cheers..
