my headlight seems to point up in the sky ,is the little plastic nut behind the headlight ,for the up /down adjustment ,i dont have a manual,so havent looked ,allthough i will youtube it in a moment

dont

don't just keep turning it cos the stupid plastic bearing i think will fall into the back of the light
then its a nice £200+ for a new headlight - read the book :beerjug:

sorry Dave i meant don't turn that knob loads of times before you can get your hands on the book - mind you if i remember correctly - the book doesn't say any where about not turning it to many times - it just says one way for up n one way for down - and when you fcuk it up its then when you go to mr BMW and say can i have a new head light please

Use a beamsetter

Both main beam & dip are moved by the same adjustment as I recall on these bikes. When I bought mine, at 3 years old, the dip beam was illuminating the front tyre, and the mains were somewhere below where the dip should be.
When I go the dip set on a beamsetter, the mains were excellent.
Before you do this, be sure to make sure your suspension is set for your weight, and the panniers/top box do not have 3 bags of cement in them. (Assuming you do not normally carry 3 bags of cement)
I cannot remember if there is a "flip" toggle on the rear of the light unit to compensate for load, but I think there is, so check this first & flip it.
This may resolve the problem.
If the dip is ok, & mains crazy, a lamp has been incorrectly installed in the nacelle.
Be sure to use a beamsetter if adjusting though, it transforms dip beam range to get it Just perfect.

The adjuster for up/down on the 05~09 RTs is on the LH side between High beam and low beam access caps. The one on the right side is for left/right adjustment.

The RH adjuster has the heavy load lever which in normal use should be parked pointing to the left of the bike. Adjusting is acheived by turning the adjuster with (the OE oil cap tool fits it) or a 13mm socket (wrap it in a few elastic bands for grip).

Anti clockwise lowers the light and VsV if I recall correctly.

Headlight adjuster

I had this on my 2010 model. I think the adjuster is the same on earlier models. You turn a knob on the dash to adjust the headlight unit (both dip and main), but if you turn it down too far, the nylon nut/spigot/thing with the left hand thread comes off the end of the cable. See the enclosed photo.
I dismantled the whole adjusting mechanism before I could work out how it worked.
It's not too difficult, but without the bits in my hand I can't describe it accurately. The photos should help.
You need to remove the black adjuster knob. It's held in place by a screw which goes through the hole at the end of the white nylon nut/spigot/thing shown in the first photo. Next unscrew the black nut which holds the cable into the dash. You might want to be careful about that. From memory it stays in place, but before you take the nut off completly do check or it might disappear behind the dash
Once the nut is off you should be able to screw the white nylon thing back onto the cable end. LEFT HAND thread. Note the flat on the back of the threaded part which stops the cable turning when you rotate the knob.
If you can't screw it on because there's not enough cable/thread showing then you might have to get a hand in behind the headlamp and move that lever shown in the last photo away from the headlamp adjuster nut to get some slack.
Turning the dash knob rotates the white nylon thing which pulls the cable in or out.
Do let me know if that's any help.

Regards Dave

Not sure on the OP's year of bike but the dash adjuster was not on the 05 to 09 models.

Headlight

When I picked up my ike brand new I was sure the adjustment was out as it was blinding drivers as I pulled up behind them. Wound the adjuster to put headlight down as far as possible but to no effect. In the end I took it back to the dealer and asked for them to check the beam level. Afterwards was much better and only took 20 mins to sort. Now I don't blind anyone and light shines on the road not the sky.
