Hi

Just bought a new 1200GSA which I guess is a 2018(19?) model. I was looking to fit some cover to protect the cylinder heads but most of the items listed on Ebay only go up to 2017 models.

Was there a design change in 2018 or would 2017 items fit?

Thanks
Pete

They'll fit.

In very late 2018 and 2019 there was a new model called the R1250 (which is not an R1200).

So long as you have an R1200 then they'll fit :thumb

Thanks. Mine was defo the last of the 1200's, went on the road in late Nov 18. I just wasnt sure if they called it an 18 or a 19 model.

While I have your ear can you recommend a brand? I will be using the bike on green lanes so the covers have to be of some use.

cheers !

Yeah sure, I use MachineArt X-Heads. They protect your cylinder heads very well, and cover the essential bits. Other's may use different types, but X-heads are very popular.

The only thing about them to watch, is fitment on the offside cylinder head is very tight against the protection bars. Some get away with it, and some (like me) fit a small 5mm spacer (only on the lower rear fitment point) when the bars bolt into the frame. That one spacer will push the bars out 5mm and enough to give the clearance needed.

These sometimes are posted in the 'For Sale' section when people sell their bikes, so you might get a good second hand price deal.

You probably already know all this, but for the benefit of anyone else reading this thread in the future....

If you end up using your bike on Green Lanes, I would also recommend you look at some other stuff...

- Barkbuster handguards (much more protection and will save your levers and hands) standard ones will just break

- Side Stand Enlarger Plate (stops your bike sinking into the dirt when parked up)

- Folding Wing Mirrors (DoubleTake do a good set, which uses Ram Mounts) They take a bashing and don't break

- Frame Protector Guards (Genuine BMW ones only cost about £25 and will save your paintwork around the boot area)

- (maybe) Headlight Protector, if your mates in front are spinning up stones..... it'll be expensive for you as LED lights are VERY expensive :blast

Other than that, go for it :D

As above re x-heads. Search for Machineart Moto bloke's demo video of them on YouTube. Mine arrived the day before my bike was delivered and went on before first use! All MAM kit is excellent stuff. There are Chinese knock offs, but he's put the effort into the design and development and is using the right materials - plastic look-alikes may be just as good at deflecting muddy water, but crash protection is a different matter imho.

Thanks mate. Yes I was considering most of the above apart from the mirrors. I will look into that :beerjug:

I have the Touratech ones, not saying they are better or worse than X-Head, but I fitted mine a few weeks ago (I also have one of the last 1200's).
I would have bought the X-Heads but I got a good deal on Touratech's.

So far, also fitted the Fender Extender, and the Mud-Sling - also worthwhile :thumby:

But not if you intend using Knobby Tyres..

The Fender extender will get ripped off, and the Mud-Sling is incompatible with a lot of knobbed tyres (it'll catch and snag)... for off-road terrain and mud, I'd keep away from these

I’m sure the 2018 GSA factory fitted crash bars have a larger rubber buffer fitted to the earlier ones, to prevent the bars being distorted in a drop. This cuts down the gap between the bars and rocker cover. I looked at this when I changed from GS to GSA a few months ago. Don’t think the Machine Art X Head covers will fit without removing the buffer.
