Come on you Innovators and Vendors. Why not design a nice shiny piece of chrome to clamp onto the header pipes like on harley davidsons so that they stop looking like pieces of rusty scaffolding. I polish the pipes every week so its not an issue and I think the blueing looks cool but a dealer here in Dublin has a blue and white 02 model for sale with 13,000 miles and the pipes are sh1t. I have 10,500 miles in 11 months and mine look new. Shame on the other owner.. his wheels are rusting away as well.

PS we dont salt the roads in Ireland.

Header Pipes

MORE CHROME?
ON A GS?
No no no no!
A small discreet piece of black plastic will go a long way towards protecting the header pipes, fit a fender extender to the front mudguard, but please, not more chrome!

Anybody know where I can get a proper mudflap for my Adv's front mudguard? I mean a real, heavy duty, fit it to a Land Rover job, designed to stop crap flying back at the bike, rather than look pretty? I tried one of those fender extender things on my Pan (sorry Tim), and it didn't seem to make much difference....

Yeah I'd agree the fender extender I got from Motobins works a treat.
It certainly cuts down on washing the pipes and front of engine, which of course lets you have more time for riding the bike. Crap still gets there but not half as much. Also the stuff that does get through is far easier to shift as does not appear to stick so hard to the bike.

Mike O,Tell me how big a piece of robber you want for your front mud flap, and I'll see what I can dig out. It's the stuff they make mud flaps from for rally cars,Tough stuff is an understatment. It cost a fortune, but I'm sure there must be an off cut lying around somewhere for you.

If you dare to put your foot inside an Harley Davidson store ;) ;ask if they got somethin that fits your BMW!

As soon as I can get to my bike (10 days or so, at a guess), I'll measure it up and send you a PM

Ouch !!

Well this thread fell on its face. I love my GS but feel that the header pipes make it look cheap when the owners neglect them. I have a fender extenda from pyramid plastics and it is an improvement.

luke I can't see it on its face.:(
I read an article about ceramic coating the inside of the pipes but in the usa.

I've got an old set of GS primary pipes in the garage I think.I'm going to see if they can be nickel plated, and if so how much it costs, you never know until you try.I'll keep you posted.

Header Pipes

There's a fellow in Florida who makes and sells chrome covers for GS headers. They're like heat shields in that they attached with hose clamps. They cost about $325.00 US. There's a better solution out there...somewhere. I'm thinking about a ceramic coating. Will let you know.

had a quick look at the headers- they look like stainless-albeit cheap 303 grade that goes brown with heat.

You could whip them off and get them 'electropolished'.

Basically a reverse process to chroming - in that it removes a microscopic top layer makin them shiney and brite again - as opposed to briney and.......

Once this is done they'll look like chrome but will resist dirt build-up due to better surface finish and re-polish up better

look up platers in the yell.com pages
