Hi folks

Came back from Skye at the weekend to find my headlamp len's now has a chip out of in roughly just off centre. That beak just channels all sorts of crap off the roads right to the len's.

does anybody know of an effective protector, as this is going to cost £90 to get replaced.

Cheers

Touratech do a cover for the 11, 1150 and 12 made out of perspex. It will protect the headlight but the price you pay is headlight refection at night.

But you can reduce the reflection by shortening the spacers.

Made my own from a small sheet of clear polycarbonate (blank sheet from a number plate) for about 2quid. Cut with jigsaw, smoothed with emery flap-wheel and stuck onto lights with some industrial velcro-stuff.

N.B. Perspex is no use 'cos it will shatter on impact.

You don't say which model you have.

I got a headlight protector for my 1200 from Ebay.

Comes with Velcro tabs - I replaced them for more heavy duty stuff though. About £13.50 incl postage and it's right on the headlamp so causes minimum deflection with maximum protection.

I had one cut out by my local sign maker(£6.00) and it is attached with 3M Dou-lok fasteners, (vecro)
I have not tested it at night yet but I expect that the lights will not be as good as "bare glass" but I do not do too much night riding.

I'm a bit wary of the type that stick onto the headlight itself - if a large stone hits it, the plastic deflector will flex and hit the headlamp lens I think.

There should really be a decent gap between protector and lens, IMHO.

Some people at Llangollen saw my "cheap ass" design, I'm working on mark 2, then I'll post pics :D

I was thinking of making one myself, but making it with a curve in it this would solve the reflection issue at night and using rubber stand off's to cushion any vibration and impact, I get some polycarbonate from B&Q and let you know how I get on.

Cheers for the replys

If it was hit with a brick maybe! The cover absorbs the impact across its surface so preventing a single point impact. ;)

The cover that I've fitted (from Ebay) is curved to fit the 1200 lamp unit and is reasonably thick.

Even a brick would struggle as the perspex will absorb the majority of the impact and spread the force over a large area.

Perspex fitted any distance from the lamp unit tends to cause problems with light scattering back.
