Headlights when driving on the right

Hi. First ever post so please be gentle!
I am going to tour in Europe this summer and guess that I will be unpopular with motorists going in the opposite direction unless I have my beams re-aligned. I realise that a BMW agent can do this, but is there a DIY solution?
Incidentally, just fitted Les Wassell's amazing HID50 lights - the results are truly awesome and Les was a real star as he patiently talked me through some of the practical issues. In the end it was amazingly easy, but his products and services are highly recommended.
 
Take off the instrument cover (the big silver plate under the screen)

look down at the light unit and there's a clamp around it (low beam)

Undo clamp, rotate lamp unit fully clockwise, re-tighten clamp, job done.

I've never bothered TBH.....maybe I just like pissing off the French :D

PS a bit of insulating/gaffa tape over the main beam lens to interrupt the main beam light shining too brightly to the 'wrong' side isn't a bad idea, at least it shoes Les Plods that you've made an effort :)

There are a few people who ride 12's though who are sensible enough to know how to read their manual, I'll let them get this one :beerjug:
 
Warning....

A mate taped his lamp up when we went on a foreign tour and the glass cracked, no stone chip nothing hit it . He/we were confident that the tape seemed to cause extra heat in the glass which cracked the glass.
 
On the rear of the headlight unit, virtually in the middle is a height adjuster. There's a knob and a lever. The lever is normally horizontal and you can push it down to drop the height of the beam. This is a quick fix if you're fully loaded. The knob in the middle allows finer adjustment - clockwise for down, anti clockwise for up IIRC. There is another control on the L/H side for horizontal positioning - I can't remember which way does what but try it and see.

If you decide to cover a portion of your light, make sure you remove it cold. I removed mine from the Blackbird hot and it took the lense coating off with it:eek: (Leaving no option but to reprofile and polish it. (Or buy another light unit))

Didn't the Blackbird's main beam dip vertically (up and down) as opposed to towards the nearside, negating the need blank a portion out?
 
Thanks everyone - very helpful and I'll be exploring the options.
It is a 1200 I have - 2010 if that makes a difference.

We're off to Europe this September on four bikes and none of us are going to bother either.

Don't know if you've noticed, but not many Europeans bringing their vehicles over here bother to change anything on their headlights either.

We've seen loads of European cars and bikes parked up at a local out of town outlet shopping area near to the North Shields ferry terminal, all without any tape or sticky deflectors on the lights. You can tell from the dazzling lights when it's dark that none have made any other alterations either.
 
I have never ever done th lights on any of the bikes or cars that I have had and taken to europe.
I look at all the cars and vans that leave Guernsey to hit france and you will see the odd older driver has done his but I would say 99% never bother.

I would not worry about it.

agree - just sort the level out if you are well loaded up, as that will annoy (and prevent you seeing the road!)
