Headphones and changed CD hardware

This afternoon I changed my CD read / write hardware which was a Sony, and not working too well, to an old Ricoh from an old PC.
Ricoh works well and I can backup data onto CD's again which is nice and I can listed to CD's without them missing bits of music which is also nice.
But my headphones no longer work.
I've been checking around control panel and device manager which shows the correct piece of hardware.
It's not of major importance but would be good to have the headphones working again as it saves disturbing Mrs. H. with my occassional music playing so thought I'd ask here in case I've missed something silly, which has been known to happen before. Having said that I'm not what you'd call expert on these here machines and don't want to try anything too clever that might upset the applecart, or even the CD playing / recording ability which apart from the headphone malfunction is all good again.

Im a bit puzzled. Are you saying that after you have changed the CD drive in your PC to a Ricoh model you can play back CDs over the speakers connected to the PC but your headphones no longer work?

Can you give details of how your speakers and headphones are connected to your PC and the model number of the Ricoh CD drive?

Yes.

The speakers are wired to a push plug into the back of the PC as they were before.
Headphone lead is plugged into the front of the Ricoh drive and there is no model number on the outside of the Ricoh I'm afraid.
In the way of the world it's a pretty minor problem but if it was something simple then it would be good to be able to fix it.

I got this from the Ricoh website.

"Speakers works but the headphone jack on the front panel doesn't.

When the digital CD audio for the device is enabled, the headphone jack does not work. The headphone jack outputs in analogue. After removing the check mark from this option, the speakers will work. You can find this option from:

• [Windows 95/98/98SE]
Control Panel >> Multimedia >> Audio CD tab.

• [Windows Me, Windows 2000 pro, Windows XP]
Device Manager >> CD-ROM >> the 'Properties' tab of the RICOH drive.

NOTE: If you have installed Media Player 7, then check to see if it is installed properly: Tools >> Options >> CD audio tab, then remove the digital audio playback option."


I read this to indicate that it is normal for the headphone jack on the front not to work if you are using the Ricoh drive to provide digital audio to a sound card (as I believe you are when you use your speakers). Play with the option indicated and see how it behaves.

I'll try and get my geek friend to have a look if I can as maybe I've missed something.
