Got the heads off to replace sheared exhaust studs (actually they had corroded through rather than shearing off.......

Should I be doing any work whilst they are off?

Does anyone know if the downpipes will polish up. Mine are fairly rusty and magnetic so presuming not stainless?

Oh and many thanks to Steptoe for his "how to".

How old is the bike and what's the mileage? Personally I would regrind the valves when it's off - only takes an hour and you only need a cheap tool to fit/remove them

I'm also looking to clean up my headers. Based on info from the parish here They are chrome plated stainless. Not as mad as it might sound and my guess is it was done for cosmetic reasons I.e. They look shinier for longer. But I plan to Polish all the chrome off. My guess is they will discolour more quickly at the head end but with a regular clean the rest will stay clean.

As for being magnetic, 400 grade stainless is magnetic so don't be fooled :-)
