Got her back this morning all damaged and hurt, the nasty piece of work was done in around an hour around midnight before the police spotted him and he crashed.
The insurance will probably write it off as the engine crash bars (L) have gone back and smashed some fins tearing away from the frame. Tank dented and rear brake caliper leaking out fluid ! Ignition snapped off the top yoke and gouged head stock, u know the score.. as a value on a 03 1150gs I doubt it will amount to much against the pain of seeing her sat there now...
On a lighter note I think a replacement such as the Adventurer model with no ABS spec and with one spark plug per head would be a good proposition for me to continue to commute to work and play.
I hope Im right in believing the 03 - 04 model is the one to have.
Any way Im new and Im signing off for now be good to hear from any of you all out there.
david.

Crap 1st post, fella:comfort

Hope it improves.......................treat yourself to nice 1150GS Adventure with the insurance money.....................you deserve it:thumb2

Welcome Pangrinder. Sorry to hear your tale of woe. Things can only get better (is that a song lyric?) :)

Rotten subject for a first post, I hope the toerag that took your bike has a few broken bones to think about today :thumb2

That, my friend, is the shitty end of the stick :comfort.

But welcome; me and my g/f have had two bikes nicked, and on two other occasions I've chased little bastards who were trying to lift my bike. It's the major reason we moved away from inner Manchester :blast

Good luck sourcing a new model.

Unlucky...

Being a tight arsed bastard and not worrying about a little cosmetic damage I would be giving the insurance a bit of a sob story about how i couldn't afford new transport and I was in love with "her":augie (bikes are it's, ahem!).

Worth a try unless you are rich and hankering for the ADV...

Might get it for a song and then get basic repairs done with the difference before pocketing the rest:D Chances are they won't nick it again unlike a new shiny one:augie

I have bought back 2 "write offs" both yielding a healthy profit.

Had a CBR600 nicked from Torbay in the late 90's. Within 36 hours it had been recovered in Newcastle (as so much has...). Knackered locks and a small scratch to the fairing where he had leant it against a fence in order to vault it!

:agree

I'm with Wrigsby1 on this. I bought my R80GS back as a write-off for £175 & pocketed around £900 after repairs. Then sold it for £1500 a couple of years later, with over 100k miles on it. Try & get the salvage, repair it & use it. Now it's lost the gloss, you won't feel so precious about it & will enjoy it so much more. Just a last thought; why not spend some of the repair money in fitting an Adv tank...?

I think we all share your sadness/anger/frustration. Its rare to be long into biking without suffering first hand from a thieving toe-rag

Insurance write-offs are inevitable - new parts and labour - against the high value of a broken bike. The sums work for you if you can source good second hand parts (you are in the right place here) and can do the spannering yourself.

Either way best of luck and welcome.

I'm with Paul buy it back get an ADV tank paint it colour of your choice bling it up and you will at least have a happy ending to this tale, best of luck :thumb

The other bit is BMW Oilheads are easy to write off but much harder to make unrideable. My present 11GS was bought in07 showing 20k miles after 11 years but had been a Cat D (? think I'm right, possible structural?) at 1 year old, and I bought it for a great price.

They are hard to break as the frames are so minimal so unless they are in a major shunt they stay straight. If not the bits to replace are peripheral.

Time for the satin black paint and stealth GS:augie

Rule of thumb is always make 'em nick the bike next to you or the one down the road etc. Like me, once bitten, twice shy!

Good advice re saving the bike and fitting a adv tank plus painting it too as I really like the yellow colour. I could also see about removing the ABS during rebuild as the aim is to have the bike as simple as possible hence the liking for the 03 model. would I have to fit the adv seat too ? I will explore the past threads to see.
I wonder how long all this insurance malarki takes as I am using an XL500R for commuting in the mean time which is not ideal.
Thanks for all your understanding...

"Keep in touch" with your insurance company and when it gets assessed, try to be there. Then you can turn on the sobs (don't overdo:D) and give them the personal story. Sometimes its a flat refusal, other times you can sway things. "I recently spent the kids birthday cash etc for essential repairs" sort of things:augie.

GS's may make some cash for the insurer but anything not too new is usually priced low by breakers so the insurer may not be as bothered. They have to transport/store etc so it's all factored in.

Another vote for buying it back and sorting it yourself, with the wanted section here, motorworks and ebay you will get a rideable bike and a budget to make it as you like :thumb2
