What's the heat sheild made of for the panniers to stop them melting if putting a Y piece with standard can?
Is it just a piece of sticky metal tape, similar to the stuff they may use on aircraft called speed tape, or is it something a bit thicker? this may save me £10.......I know not much but more money for real toys then :thumb

Had my pannier with the metal tape on, it still got melted, right on the corner.
So have had the pannier plated with carbon fiber, nice job, looks good and heat proof.

£25 thought that was a good price :D

Never really had a problem with my first GS and the system panniers just make sure the exhaust is straighten with a washer or 2 if required.

If you do need it, then any pro racing shop with sell panels, just got a piece for my Jesses here as they do get hot on the exhaust side. Google it, I got mine for around $11.00 here, can't be much more on the expensive lsland.

You might not know this, while carbon fiber is unlikely to burn, the resin used will. When the resin has burnt off it does leave the scorched carbon fibers behind though in the lay up that they were originally in. Which is rather helpfull if you're trying to repair a CRP / GRP structure.

BTW "GRP is the same but not as black to start with.

Cheers John, they told me this and used some heat resistant glue

The heat resistant glue will, if it works, hold the floppy fibres in place once the resin has burnt off. The level of protection won't be as good then IMHO.

I'll keep an eye on it and give it a couple of long run's before my trip to Europe.

When I had system panniers I used the sheets of webbing stuff that plumbers use when braizing. B&Q sell the for a fiver I think. They look like a thick piece of black canvas and they are completely fire/flame proof . From memory the sheets are approx 9" square.

I used 2 pieces cut to shape and fixed them on with some Hal*ords black mastic which is flexible . Used them for about a year and no problems , cost about £13 all in .

I know it works because i held a blowtorch to the material !

Easy

The OE Beemer heat shield has worked fine for me, fitted ages ago and does what it says on the box.

There was a lengthy discussion about this a while ago:
