heated clothing

Thin, heated base layers were not available 15 or more years ago.

Absolutely. The first ones definitely made you feel like the Michelin man. In fact, my wife and I sometimes couldn’t be arsed playing out in winter as the bulky clothes were just not comfortable enough.

When we changed to the heated shirt we found ourselves going out a lot more in winter. I don’t know if some of it is psychological - putting on bulky clothes kinda mentally makes you think it’s colder than it is and maybe not worth it.

I have coming today the RST Base Layer Thermal Wind Block Long Sleeves Top.

RST Wind Block

I have also brought a pair of Keis G301 '3 Finger' Ultimate Warm Heated Gloves.
I have got these from the SportsBikeShop. RRP £200, Sale price £150, Plus an extra 10% off as its a clearance item. So paid just £135.01 which is the cheapest i found anywhere.
use code "EXTRA10" at checkout.

Keis Heated Gloves

I am going to give their baselayer a go, as an alternative to either my merino base layer or my heated liner jacket. I have a spare dual remote controller / receiver, so I might as well use it.
I use the W&S base layer, with a merino baselayer over the top

plenty warm for going to Strontian

And you can just chuck it in the washing mc after every trip

Went down to Motolegends, Guildford and bought the Warm’n’Safe heated base layer. I already have a spare dual controller / receiver.

Served by the Twat in the Hat, who was very helpful.

I think I’ll buy myself some Warm’n’Safe heated gloves. I do have my Rapid Fire heated liners, but flexibility and choice is always good. They only had XL (too large) and small (too small) in stock, but the fresh stock comes in, in a day or so.

Those bikermates with access to this week’s MCN will find reviews of current ( see what I did there) clothing.

For what it’s worth, I don’t subscribe to the temperature control things on the cuffs of gloves, not least as the cuffs should be inside the sleeves of one’s jacket, to prevent the rain running down and in. Remote control for temperature variation, is the way to go.

Likewise the temperature control app. Most bods on their steed of awesomeness, use the phone for navigation. To control the temperature would require closing or shrinking the map screen, to bring up the temperature control app. More fiddling about on the move and stabbing at a screen with a gloved hand…… and to think bikermates criticise car drivers. No thanks.

Depending on how many controllers you have, you now have to work out how your going to link and control stuff

I use upper body on Yellow & lower on Red , but that can change depending what ive plugged the BT box into lol

The ideal is each item of apparel on a separate circuit -but you need 2 controllers,

Back home, I can look at the schmutter more carefully.

1. It fits well, with my long sleeved merino layer beneath.

2. It is cut to a very good length, meaning that it will tuck comfortably and well into my trousers.

3. The wire heating elements extend across the rib cage at the front, across the lower back and kidneys at the rear and, sort of, down to T-shirt length on the sleeves. All good.

4. It all seems nicely made, so quality control is OK. I know it works, as I tried it in the shop.

Happy enough so far. I just need to wire it up to my spare receiver / wireless controller, which I’ll do at my leisure.

If you are going out all day in the cold, it will probably suit best. Of though, yiu are only popping out, stopping, walking about and riding home, the conventional heated liner, might be better perhaps. Why? You stop, take the liner off and stuff it somewhere, saving you overheating. That is easier, perhaps, than a base layer?

I have two twin remote conrollers, both bike powered.

One twin, controls the jacket and gloves, separately and independently of each other.

The second twin, controls trouser liner and socks, separately and independently.

The controller(s) I mount with Velcro to the clutch reservoir on my 1600. On the Himalayan, I mount them onto the brake reservoir. I don’t use the second twin as often as the first. When I do use it, I simply mount it on top of the first, like a layer cake.

Colours:

Red, trousers and jacket

Yellow, socks and gloves

Are looking at the Classic style or Tourer.
I have classics, but they are now 18 years old. Still waterproof though.

That’s interesting. Every time I’ve looked they’ve only sold WnS heated liners. I’ve never seen them sell the full gloves before.

Cheers.
I will get my mate to bring me a pair back from the US. Saves on customs from the UK :blush

I did think of ordering some from the US website. But I find that gloves are odd things size and shape wise. It was only whilst I was in Motolegends shop, that I thought to ask them if they sold any Warm’n’Safe gloves.

Here’s Warm’n’Safes’ full range:

The RST Base Layer Thermal Wind Block Top is here. Its a nice fit and feels warm.
I'm 6ft 15st with long arms and the XXL size fit me nice.

The Keis G301 gloves are here. I thought they would feel strange having only 3 fingers, but because each finger has its own pocket inside the glove they feel like normal padded winter gloves. They look very well made and they also have a little pocket in the cuff if you want to use a battery. I got the 3XL as i have big hands and the fit is nice.
So i'm just waiting for the replacment Keis jacket (smaller size) and then i'm good to go to see how good the Keis items are and if it was worth the money.
Total cost for the Keis Jacket, Keis Gloves and RST wind block base layer top was £355 at discounted prices. The RRP for all 3 items without any discount is £480. So a £125 saving is a good start.

I would also like the thank you all for the time you have spent in posting info to help me.

At least Keis have listened to one criticism. I see that they have put what I take to be the temperature controller, on the body of the glove. That is much more useful than putting it on the glove’s cuff.

PS You know we’ll now get the mildest winter on record, don’t you?
