Been riding most of the winter :augie(well expect the really crappy period that we all had:() and as usual I'd been on the search for the ultimate winter gloves:rob.

I bought a pair of Goretex ones (alpinestars)that didn't really do much more than most other gloves but I got wind of a comment that the heated grips ruin the goretex membrane:eek::tears

Can anyone confirm this to be fact or fiction:blagblah My brain tells me fiction but I've been wrong before (rarely..:bow).

I had thought that heated grips AND goretex gloves should be the ultimate combination but.......:nenau

Any advice:confused:

I'm sure there's somebody going to come up with a theory. However, in parctice I've had goretex gloves last years when used with heated grips. They finally failed to be waterproof when my thumb started poking out the end of the glove - which was due to wear and tear.

I rode all winter (including the crappy bits) in summer gloves! Heres how:-

Furry muffs plus heated grips. :rob

Warm as toast :thumb2 No messin!!

310miles Dorset to Dragon Rally on Anglesey in the snow no cold hands :clap!!! (although did notice me tootsies gettin nippy! Wally flaps for next winter I 'spose:D)

Me too

I'm with Jonnie. Got through most of winter (missed one day due to snow) with summer gloves and Muffs. Might not be the prettiest things (though I kinda like them now), but toasty hands and summer glove throttle sensitivity is well worth it.

Bought them from Val too, pleased as punch!

As I have said in a previous post, leather and goretex gloves plus heated grips equals warm dry hands. The gloves that I wear are not motorcycle gloves. They are current British Forces issue Combat Gloves. Been using them (the same pair) for 5 years and never had them leak. You can buy t6hem from Silvermans for less than half the price of 'waterproof' M/C gloves.

Best gloves that I have ever used. In fact they are the only gloves that I have got.

Both and get some of these:

We were talking to a clothing rep at a bike show, he told us that rain will pass as vapour from the out side of a Gortex glove to the inside, if its warmer on the outside as when using heated grips. Seems to make perfect sense to me.

Hi
Membranes work like this.Moisture goes from the hot side to the cold side. and your hand will be kept dry. When you have hotgrips they works in the other direction. And you will be wet.

I do not think, I do ! (hm, sounds like Yoda, never mind that)
You have forgotten that Ze Zerman Enzineerz have thought about this and came up with the ProWinter 2(zwei) glove. Google it about it's usability.
Have this glove and use it with and without heated grips. So far, so good. :thumb2

Another recommendation for the bar muffs. I used to think they were a gimmick, I now think they are the best £40 I spent all winter. I don't use a car so need to keep warm even on the coldest days:

Thin motorcross gloves worn inside muffs so easy, comfortable control of the bike without 'sausage fingers', heated grips on low if really cold and no freezing cold airflow over the back of the hands. Bliss.:)

:nenau Not how I understand it.....
I've just looked on the Goretex website and it seems to be how I reckon that...
the Gore layer has pores in it...too small for WATER droplets...about 20,000 times smaller if the blurb is to be believed..
and for the breathability...the pores are about 700 times LARGER than the water vapour you produce when sweating....so it evaporates out....
seems to make sense to me and have fek all to do with temperatures....
and..seeing as my HEATED gloves have a goretex style mebrane in them it would kinda defeat the whole object wouldn't it ?:)

Goretex is the same material as on non-stick pans. If it doesn't melt on my frying pan then it won't on my heated grips

IME, Goretex gloves keep my fingers dry.

Heated grips keep my fingers warm.

Are you sure about that? Non-stick pans are teflon (PTFE). I'd always thought that the secret to gotex was the small diameter pore size, not the material its made of. Guess it'd need to be a bit special to keep the pores even when flexing though?

Not actually true, GORETEX and most other waterproof breathable membranes funtion because they have tiny holes in the membrane, these holes are smaller than a water molecule but bigger than a watervapour molecule, so therefore water cant get in, but sweat can get out. In practise the heated grips cannot affect this process, unless your heated grips are hot enough to turn the water on the outside of the gloves into steam.

The excuse that the grips are causing it is the most widely used by manufacturers to avoid replacing leaking products.

Another not so well known fact is that the GORETEX membrane is covered by a LIFETIME warranty against leaks, even when outside the makers warranty you can contact GORE PRODUCTS direct and they will arragne a replacement. I know this first hand after many conversations with their technical director, I bought a £1400 rukka suit and it was faulty and leaked, both the retailer (OkEMOTO, and the Wholesaler TRANAM) refused to deal with the issue claiming that as i was using a heated jacket I was effectively stopping the membrane from working. GORE ordered RUKKA to send me a new suit, which they did, you see for anyone to use goretex in their products they have to be licensed and conform to strict manufacturing tolerences, this ensures if you buy Goretex you should get a lifetime of dryness, wear and tear excluded of course!!
