Heated Hand Grip Rumours

I am about to purchase a GS650 and have heard some rumours about the heated grips. It has been suggested to me they are possible more trouble then they are worth and often fail in warmer humid climates (eg Northern Australia) and fall apart off-road. This is the first time I have heard this and normally I would dismiss a one off comment like this, however, in this case it was from a reasonably reliable source.

Would anybody be able to shed any light on this issue? Are these alligations true or a load of rubbish?

Thanks in advance and I look forward to any information.

Regards.

Can't comment on the rumour but....

Do you really need heated grips in Australia? I've never used them in the UK & I have it on good authority that your climate is slightly warmer than that of the UK..........

Sure do need them in winter (can get below freezin in the Hills) - but then I am a pommie pooofta !!

No problem with them down in the Sahara..................apart from bastard mates turning each others on when they're not looking :D

Triton,
I had them on my Dakar for 25000 miles (a good percentage of those on trails or on the way to trails!) no problems.
I never had them switched on when off roading though - just for road use.
If you think you need 'em buy 'em.

Take no heed of rumours.

Although I have heard they are being discontinued since they may contribute to global warming:rolleyes:

I ride to work everyday, admittedly it's only a few miles. 230 miles covered last weekend, outlast night & covered 1,200 miles since I serviced it in mid December. 11,500 miles since buying it on 29th May '04.

No Superhero though.

So the next question has to be what gloves are you using????

I use them when the temperature's low (duh, obviously!) as I can keep wearing summer gloves for much longer.

Never been much of a fan of fat gloves, so with the hand guards and heated grips there's far fewer times that I've needed them.

Sadly they don't help much in the rain though!

Frank Thomas ChillZone, £80.00 if still available. They're not the warmest gloves I've ever used, I bought them because they're one of the few winter gloves with sports glove style protection.

Knuckle protection, Kangaroo skin palms etc. They're no good if you long fingers IMO but they suit me & I'm happy.

My hands do get cold sometimes but I deal with it:D

Thanks all for the information. It would appear the rumour is a furphy so I shall ignore it.

Regards.

Triton - check out advrider - local forums - australia - for a possible big meet up soon.

I might have some OEM grips for sale - can't see as i'll ever need 'em :D
