Question to heated seat owners. (I'm still thinking of getting one).

Heated grips and soaking wet gloves can reverse the Goretex membrane effect and draw water into the glove, instead of letting sweat out. Making your hands soaking wet, but at least warm.

Does this same process work for heated seats in the rain? Or is your seat better protected so your backside doesnt get wet.

Or does the heated seat just draw the water back through your goretex membrane like gloves do.

I had one on my Triumph Explorer a few years back. I don't recall any moistness (matron!) through my Rukka trousers with the heated seat on and it raining.

I've not had wet hands from heated grips and goretex gloves in the rain and I'm an all year round commuter

Its only happened to me a few times, but thats torrential rain and 3-6 hours exposed on rideouts.

So its exposure in heavy rain for multiple hours that I'm concerned about.

I have long suspected that long periods in heavy rain with heated grips causes the Goretex to function badly

** I dont have a problem mainly due to the fact that my heated grips are so shite

Yes and you'd be right. The heat from grips reverses the goretex flow. So your gloves will slowly fill with water in heavy rain, over time. Water breach will be from the palms, fingers and surrounding material. You can literally wring the water out!

Best to just turn off heated grips in heavy rain and maintain the goretex flow of wicking moisture away from your hands and stopping water ingress. But then your hands will be cold.

Long periods of heavy rain can result in rusty chains :augie :aidan

Isn't the problem with the gloves that the heat is on the "wrong" side of the goretex?
So not the case with a heated seat (external to the goretex of your trousers).

You might be thinking of heated gloves, not heated grips (which cause the issue).

In persists heavy rain I got a wet arse on my Explorer through the gortex, I took it up with the shop as I didn't know about the heat thing.
It took a full day riding in very heavy rain though.

Yeah thought it might be an issue. Answer is to turn off the heated seat & grips in heavy rain for long periods.

It still would be handy for cold dry days. Just a shame about goretex, rain and external heat issue.

I've also got an Alpinestars Pro-shell suit, very expensive but doesnt absorb water at all. I wonder if that material would protect better when external heat is applied? On the basis its Pro-Shell.

Thanks for the feedback though guys, very informative.

I'll have to be strategic about its usage I think  as I ride for very long periods of time during winter and bad weather.

Yep - that's exactly what I was thinking (must read posts more carefully :blast)
