Heavy Metal around Mongolia and Central Asia

you , lucky ,lucky ,bastards. that just took 2 evenings to read through. absolutely, bloody fabulous. green with envy. anyone who says that they are not is a liar !

Just finished reading this awesome RR which made our 6000 mile 15 day jaunt around Europe look small!

I hate to think what a trip like this must have cost, but it is definately something I would really love to do some day if her indoors would let me go for that length of time :(

We just doin a little one this year then off to Norway, Sweden etc next year hopefully touching Russia so I will remember what you said about the truckers :)

Again, awesome ride report.........whatever happened to Baz finishing his version of it

Glad you enjoyed:beerjug:

Cost wise, around £1000 for all the visas and associated paperwork! That's partly down to the route which included a few 'difficult' countries.

On top of that, it's just ferrys, tyres, fuel, food, fines and accommodation etc. etc. which was probably around £4k.

Bear in mind for about half the trip we were camping so no cost there although we could have camped more to reduce costs further but there were times when we'd ridden so hard we just needed a bed...of course now the memory of just how tired we all got at times has faded.

So I think it was around £5k all in, for me a fortune, for others it may be a drop in the ocean, either way it's the best £5k I've ever spent:thumb

I don't know what happen to Baz's photos, perhaps Smugmug or someone else censored pictures of his Biting Prostitutes, who knows.:nenau
I had an email from him a couple of days ago suggesting we all meet up again for a ride.....I think to celebrate what's left of his freedom, he's going to be a Dad! :clap (I believe his wife will be the mother:thumb)

So enjoy Russia, it's a wonderful experience which grows on you the longer you're there...yes, watch out for the cops but more importantly, watch your backs for the Russian Truckers!:D

Read in one go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! with a couple of cold ones.
BEST THREAD R/R EVER thank you for your effort to write it all up!

it seems even better the next time round:clap:beerjug:

though Baz's pics seem to have vanished:confused:

Just spent the day re reading this amazing RR...

What an incredible journey, the thought of riding across a landscape, not on a road, not on a track even, just a cross the land, is awe inspiring.

And the thought of being literally in the middle of nowhere, with no medical services whatsoever, flying along on a heavily laden GS... My blood ran cold a few times!

I guess it's something you guys'll never forget...

P.S. - what's happened to Baz's notes & pics..?

Hi David
Baz has just got the old girl back on the road after being stupid busy with other stuff. We'r planning a little trip in sept but not even a remote patch on that trip!

Cheers Duncan

You're right there David, I think we all at some time of each day reflect on a part of the trip.:)

Since we all loved riding fast offroad, we dealt with the obvious dangers largely by ignoring them:D
After a while you can be be lulled into a sense of invincibility, which with luck on your side can be a good thing.
The problems come when you take a small injury, your riding to protect yourself and mortality becomes real.

The way I see it is, you ride your best and very focused, just the same as if you're out locally.
The issue some folk have is they see their situation on say Google Earth and begin to zoom out, that realisation of being in an extremely remote place with a too heavy machine on top of them can take some head spaces out of their comfort zone. What you really need to be doing is revelling in it:bounce1

So, it's all in the mind. Pete and I knew we'd been lucky many times through riding fast. When we arrived in Europe he smiled and said "Well feck me, we pulled that off"! and we were both suprised :thumb

I know this is nearly 3 years old, but I was drawn to this RR via the discussions about the new UKGSer header.

A breathtakingly amazing ride. Wonderful photos and write up. The sort of trip that most of us can only dream of :bow

Thank you for taking the time and trouble to share it with us.

Absolutely right, and despite knowing this well, after my relatively minor spill last weekend, my riding style took a huge dip during the week. Glad to report I'm back on form now (busted ribs or not!)

What is it about the warmth of the Mongolian character?

vette

Yes, the warmth and hospitality of them is one of my great memories from the trip, I'll dig out some pictures of the people:thumb
