Anyone had a go at reducing the weight of the 1100? If so I'd like to hear what you did and the results.

Is there some way to dump the secondary ali frame from the back of the bike and still have a way of mountin panniers and a rack?

You can lower it by ~ 3 cm, making the center of gravity lower. Mount an RT reaction linkage under the shaft housing

I replaced the stock exhaust with a Laser one, felt no different and buggered up the fuel economy, the best way I have found of reducing weight on the bike is to go to the Gym

They're just plain heavy (or at least feel it because the weight is carried high).

That said, the weight disappears once you're rolling as they're also well balanced.

If you're short of leg and are on a knife-edge when stationary, it might not be the bike for you...

My 1100 feels so light and nimble compared to the 1150ADV, it's all relative

I had the same problem, so I added verns panniers, a TT 42ltr tank and a tankbag it handles much better now with a bit of extra weight, it was so light to start with it was way to lively, still lighter than the harley. Its all relative

You don't need the ali part to mount the panniers.

But the ali part is the lightest part.

Why try? It's already far lighter than a 1200 Tenere or 1200 GSA

I reduce the weight of mine by simply getting my fat arse off it

Compared to a Triumph Rocket 3 the 1100/1150 is light and nimble

Thanks lads, all of your replys are being stored next to my chocolate teapot.

Seat height is not a problem (I'm tall and lardy) and on the road the weight does not affect the handling, but it does affect the performance mainly the grunt out of corners.

The main reason is that the bike is needlessly heavy, I mean the subframe has a subframe onto which you bolt the pannier subframes!!!!!

I was considering moving to a 1200 but all that tech? WTF is all that about?

The alternative is ride it and not try anything silly.

I'll say it again - the bmw pannier mounting frames bolt direct to the subframe. There is only one subframe.

Why do you ride this machine? surely if it's too heavy and it aint got enough
"go" why not get something else?, something constructive rather than complaining?.

Like Steptoe sez - there's just one steel subframe - the panniers mount to this. The silver alloy casting locates the rear mudgard, the rear seat, the tool tray (together with some other bits and pieces) and forms the rear rack. If you have a topbox, this is what it mounts to (and is why you shouldn't overload your topbox). The silver cast bit doesn't weigh much anyway.

I've never found my 1100 lacking in 'grunt out of corners'. That said, I don't expect it to pull like a Jap litre sportsbike
