Factoring the cost of decent security into the purchase price of a bike, I fancy an Almax Immobilser IV chain. I still have my Abus Granit padlock (37/60) & hexagonal chain, and a Granit U-Lock, both keyed-alike, which I really found convenient.

I'm thinking I'd use that combo for mobile security (when I get my GS ), as I happily did with my FireStorm (deadly Oxford Locsafe for carrying the U-Lock behind the number plate (are they still on the market?), and the chain & padlock in my tankbag), but the 19mm Almax chain would certainly be a step-up for locking up at home.

Rather than the Squire padlock that comes with the Almax IV chain, I'm thinking I might instead look at the Granit 37RK/80 padlock, so I could get that keyed-alike with my current locks.

I gather that the Abloy PL362 is probably the most fuck-off padlock out there, and probably better than the Abus, but I do like the Abus keyed-alike feature.

Anyone on here got any experience with that hefty Granit 37RK/80 padlock? Or the Abloy bad boy?

My 2p worth.....
Don't spend a fortune on chains and padlocks. An angle grinder will go through them all like butter.
Go for middle range, reputable maker stuff. Something that looks the part and might deter opportunist thieves.

There is a scam where someone sells the squire padlocks cheaply and offers to post it to you. Hey presto they copy the key first. Be careful!

Rotalok is gonna be more fuck off than either of those two, here's a LINK

However I just had a bit of a shock seeing the price on the link I sent you. When I last bought one they compared with what you are looking to spend on the Abloy. Whilst that was 10 years ago I can't believe they have gone up that much over the years  Maybe a proper Google will turn up some more realistic prices?

£300 for a padlock is just a tad too fuck-off for my inclinations...

Not to sound like a gullible non-thinking consumer, but by all accounts, that 19mm Almax chain seems to be a pretty tough chain? At the time I bought my Abus chain, it was highly regarded, but a video I saw recently saw it (and others) fail in seconds to a big bolt-cropper, despite being Thatcham-approved.

Even if the big Almax job did fail to a grinder in minutes, there'd be no place I'd ever park where a fucker with a grinder would go unnoticed for minutes, plus he'd also have to get past the U-lock, a disc-lock, possibly a second chain & padlock, and a bike cover, and probably an alarm, all with the bike parked in a well-lit cul-de-sac outside my front window, chained to either a lamp post or a ground anchor, over-looked by dozens of houses & apartments. And it'll likely be a 10-15 year-old bike...

After being stung before, and suffering the hassle of a stolen bike, I'm inclined to do what I have to to minimise the prospect of a repeat.

My 2p is that you can do what you like and they will take it if they want.

I agree that visible security is better than nothing but the bastards today are making off with bikes in broad daylight in the centre of London.

Mine has physical security and tracker. Hopefully that way if and when it gets knicked (again) when the old bill fetch my bike they nab a few of thieving bastards and hopefully recover a few other bikes too

I have a Datatool Python chain (hanging up in my workshop ) which is as much chain and padlock as I'd expect to need, I certainly wouldn't want to have carry on on a bike!

I only use for chaining bikes to my trailer if I have to leave it unattended anywhere.

Best padlock for chain is the Squire SS65C Lev3 LPCB, it is higher security than the one Almax supply, the Rotalok someone else mentioned is also vey good. I can put you onto a link if you can't source at the right money.

I have a F-Off squire but it hardly ever gets used Too heavy and bulky.

I also have a Motrax with English chain medium spec that does get used.

The Motrax will last under a minute with a battery angle grinder. The Squire maybe a bit longer so what's the point. Get something you will actually use.

A good enough padlock is all you need because they will cut the chain its easier than attacking almost any padlock.
