Height of Mushroom Heads For Vario Panniers ??

Hi Folks

I've just bought a second hand pair of vario pannier rails, and was wondering if there is a set height needed on the mushroom head screws, so the panniers fit correctly and don't fall off ??

Yes there is, mine were set by the dealer but the varios still felt loose.

I undid mine and then trial fitted my Varios until I was happy they were tightly in place with the fittings well into the locating lugs and then locked them off, it was a lot better than the receommended setting.

There's a thread (with official BuMW pic's) on UKGSer, I recall. Search will turn it up.

They are easy to set by trial (and not too much error) without the BuMW guide. Get them about right, then play around to get a nice tight fit with the pannier locks. Then lock in place with the lock nut and / or apply a blob of Loctite.

As per the mushroom setting in the manual the panniers do not seem to be very well secured. I screwed the mushrooms in a little at a time until the panniers would only just lock in place, then backed off a bit and did up the lock nut. To fit the panniers now I just have to move them around a little when pressing down on the latch and they lock on really tight. Loctite seems like a good idea on the mushroom screw as well, although I did not bother myself and they have not worked loose.
