Does anyone have a Hein Gericke Master IV JACKET or SUIT - are they any good? Are they better than the TUAREG? Any feedback would be most appreciated as would the cheapest place to buy one.

I have both

I am fortunate to have both and find that the Turareg is better for the summer / spring . The master suit is fantantic if not a little too warm. The trousers are the same and both have removable thermal "duvet thick" inners.

Actually with get pissed on yesterday I had my tureg jacket with master trousers this morning with a fleece underneath as I found it too much hassle to insert the liner at 06.00. If the I had I would of been very toasty.

HTH,

Nick

Hein Gericke Pish!

I had a Turareg basic jacket I decided to test it with a 40mph low side, the stitching on the sleeve split wide open, leaving me with a nice bit of road rash, on closer investigation the thread used to stich the sleeve together was ordinary cotton thread. I took it back to Gericke and complain that there"saftey stitch system" is crap, the manager seemed at a loss as to what to do with it, he eventually decided to send it back to there UK HQ. Im still waiting to hear from them.

Ive since bought a Belstaff Jacket that comes with a 2 year guarntee, I wont be buying Hein Gericke again.

I use a HG Cruiser suit waterproof leather with Gore tex, its real comfortable, I know several users of Tuaregs and all are very happy with them, you need the higher spec tuareg rallye Gore tex, I also know several users of the BMW waterproof leathers and they are also very happy with their kit.

ouch!!

thats much worse than what i got when ate tarmac - and i was wearing, well, not much protection!! maybe there's a message there somewhere...

but - i do own a pair of Tuareg Rallye strides and i love 'em. some people may find them a bit low on the hip, but they are v. comfy, warm and 'look' well made.

Master IV

Got the full Master IV suit and think it is a good bit of kit, better by far than the Dainese stuff I had before.

Agree with Commuter, too hot & bulky for mid summer use, I also have lightweight jacket. (An old Enduro jacket, good ventilation with built-in armour.)

Would certainly reccomend the HG suit for most of the (British) year.

Cheers, Rick.

Got told a story from a friend of a guy who binned his sports bike at a track day whilst wearing a Dainese one piece suit, and it split, apparently it only has one row of stitching.

When buying kit, i think its always best to check out the item yourself and not rely on brand names.

Thanks to all who replied to this thread - your input has been invaluable. I definitely will not be going for the Tuareg suit as motorcycle clothing has to be at least PROTECTIVE doesn`t it!! Looks like the Master IV wins (I would rather be warm than scarred) Wonder if there are going to be some bargains at the "tail ender"?:thumb

Hein Gericke Gear

Stef, We have not met but get well soon.

I too have some HG gear but after a high side on some diesel followed by a slide down the road of some 30ft on my front. My HG Voyager suit kept me in one piece, mostly. I landed on my left side, my left arm and hip taking most of force on landing. The lower front pocket wore through to expose the keys in there and the arm wore through on the fore arm and elbow, but only to the water proofing layer. I broke a slice off the ball on my left arm shoulder joint and got a bruise in the shape of my mobile on my chest. My Alpine Tech6 boots however wore through the steel plate's on the tip's of the toes and the toggle buckles melted with the friction when my left boot turned and the buckles touched the road. I've since healed up and have replaced the Voyager suit with another. However the original trouser's are pretty much unmarked and are still waterproof.

Back in 92 I ended up on the underside of a Granarda private hire taxi after the Tos**r driving it did a high speed reversing stunt back over the brow of a hill. As a result I did not get to the top the hill, instead I was opened up like a whale on the deck of a trawller. Lost most of my blood and spent 2 days wrapped in tinfoil while dopped up on cocane and morphine for weeks. Had loads of blood transfusions (and I hate needles). 6 operations, 4 to save the leg and loads of physiotherapy sessions. I was wearing a good quality leather two piece suit but the leather was just sliced open on the underside of the car. The jacket has 2 holes cutting into the stomach area were the twin exhaust tail pipe of the car caught me as the car came over me. Luckerly the bike a CBR600 went under with me and helped protect me from been crushed.

I feel the gear did well on both occasions and I was lucky also. Any gear is better than none! It's the fools in tee shirts and shorts on bikes that make me feel mad, but hey it's their choice!

I like the Hein Gericke stuff, it's served me well so far. I know your gear has let you down and lets just hope that the jacket slipped through quality control and this never happens again.

Glad you lived to tell the tale, My HG Tuareg was the "basic" the Tuareg Ralley Gor-Tex does look better. I think HG problem is quality control, wandering around there Glasgow shop, my other half (who used to be a machinest) found three Textile jackets on which the stitching was "coming away" worrying if thats just jackets hanging on a rail. My advice if buying HG would be buy the more expensive kit and check it over with a fine tooth comb.
The armour in my jacket did do its job, it was the basic stuff that comes with the jacket except for the added back protector.

As for those who choose to ride in t-shirts etc, I cringe at what would happen to them, given the road rash I got while wearing proper kit. I saw a guy the other day in a petrol station on a Spondon he had obvousley spent £10k+ on the bike, he was wearing a canvas waterproof jacket (the type found in Millets) and his pilllion, she had on a sheepskin jacket and 20 year old lid.

Grandtrousers,

It sounds as though your minds made up, but here's my two penneth worth'. Both my wife and I have the HG Tourag Rallye Gore-Tex suit and can't recommend them enough.

At the moment we're on a 4 year trip RTW and to date have been through 16 countries in rain, snow, ice and temperatures ranging from -23 to 100+. We've also had several spills, some slow speed off's at the end of a long day and one at speed, involving some wonderfull tarmac sliding with pretty sparks for good measure. So far the suits have proved damm near indestructable. No seems have gone and they've been 100% waterproof. They're looking a little tired but have protected us in all the right places and i reckon will do so for some time yet.

it's worth mentioning that these are the first HG suits we've worn so don't know what the previouse stuffs like. Based on experience though I'd buy the same again.

Anyway whatever you buy have fun and maybe see you on the road.

all the best

If you do choose to buy from Gericke, here is a little tip for you. If you are buying from their website, find the part number of the item(s) you want, then go to pay for it on the EURO website, it works out cheaper!!

Have fun!

Judging by the amount of kit HG has on offer at the BMF's, i think they just make loads of kit and bang it out, if you happen to get something with a dodgy bit of stitching and take it back, they'll exchange it, if you don't...they've made some extra cash by skipping quality control. I've got two sets of the Tuareg, one from the shop, one from BMF. No differance, apart from about £350, but the BMF jacket isn't totally waterproof, hence the £40 price tag.
More than happy with it tho'
