Hi all,

I bought the mandatory Tourag outfit in April last year.... rode an Africa Twin then :D

I have noticed that the last few times I have been caught in a decent bit of rain the waterproof lining feels wet on the inside :(

It's worst under and around the tops of the arms. I have the receipt and wondered if this would be covered by the gaurantee. Will they have to send it away leaving me without a jacket or is there anything I can do to improve the waterproof qualities of the outer jacket

If it`s within the warranty Hein Gericke will offer to replace it....you won`t be left without a jacket :D

I hope so,

The zip broke at the bottom of the trousers after a week and they wanted to send them away for repair :spitfire

I kicked up a stink and they relented. I only have till April 4th on the gaurantee. If they insist on sending it away I will try and insist on a loan Jacket :D

Don`t forget you`re entitled to a refund if the goods aren`t 'fit for purpose' .

I will see what their reaction is. It's been a realy good suit and I don't like the look of the new one :(

I have done about 10k in the year so it's nicely grimey

Make sure you go in on a day when they are nice and busy. Don't kick up a fuss just make it obvious what you are doing.
Nobody likes adverse customer publicity do they? :thumb

Well I have washed it a few times and adhered to the munufacturers instructions, funnily enough it has just been washed after last sundays wombat hunt where it got very dirty.

It has leaked in the past but that was a 200 mile journey in torential rain and thought maybe that weather was a bit much for the jacket.

This latest episode was my 15 mile jaunt to work in moderate to light rain with the usual sray from the cars etc in front.

Had one for 7 years... the more you wash, the more it'll leak (you wash all the proofing out). Best advice is wash it in Nikwax tech wash and then spray it with Nikwax waterproofer - pay special attention to seams. This'll stop the leaks.

Millets for all the above.

Or the waterproofing stuff that Hein Gericke sell ( conveniently,eh ? ).
It`s a two part process involving a wash then a tumble dry ISTR.

Hey Jon, are you sure it's not condensation building up?

Gortex is pretty fussy stuff, it likes you to wear stuff that contains 'Coolmax' and the likes, this helps wick moisture away quickly. Also if the outer is well soiled moisture tends to be slow at being removed and slows down the permeability of the Gortex membrane rendering the wearer damp.

When you treat the outer jacket be sure to use a breathable proofing solution, otherwise you will suffocate the Gortex membrane leading to the inner jacket becoming wet with condensation!

Your claim will be with Gore and not HG if it is leaking, they should send it away for you.

Thanks for the advice guys,

I spoke to HG today and they said they would need to send the jacket away for testing. However they did offer a loan jacket without me having to ask. If they found a fault they will replace it with a new jacket.... but I don't like the new ones :(

As my warranty is till the end of april I will try some of the above tips and see how I go. The jacket has been washed about 4 times in the year as have the trousers. The trouser are fine but obviously don't get the same pounding from the rain as the jacket.

When it comes to leaking kit (a pair of gloves and a jacket) I've had dealings with two branches of Hein Gericke, Chester and Glasgow, both were more than helpful and replaced the items without any fuss. Maybe try another branch?

Cheers

I didn't think the outer jacket was waterproof

It is the inner liner that makes it waterproof isn't it ?

You are correct Nick,

What has been suggested is that I do some treatments to the outer jacket to help it breath better thus helping the trapped moisture dissipate.

That sounds very technical... :eek

Jon :)

Well I have ordered the Nikwax two pack treatment from Hein Gericke and it was only £6.99.

The guy at mail order said it would do the trick.

Will let you know how successful it is as there are a lot of you folks with the same outfit.

Thanks again all for the advice

I have treated my jacket twice by 'washing' it in the HG stuff.

Doesn't seem to make a lot of difference :(
