Some people have been asking about light patterns of the Hella lights. I played around a bit with my camera.

Here's the lights setup, Hella FF50 driving lights on my light bar + Hella Micro DE fogs on the crashbars:

what a mess !

leaves everywhere ..... :)

still - now you can see them all you can sweep up in the dark :D

Fit..

Migsel,
Have you through about fitting 50% brighter philips etc bulbs to replace the stock man and dip bulbs. Makes a reasonable difference. Not a huge one, but worth the approx £15 ish of cost.

Is it me..?..You seem to have a narrow spread with those FF50's.. my FF75s i think are spread a bit wider, its hard to tell from the photo, but my light spread seems to be much higher/wider. Have you tried toeing them out a bit?

Another thing to consider, is by mounting the De's on the crash bars, the side ways light spread is partly onto the bike. by putting them into your mount, under or over the FF50's you will get more spread and use more of the light cone generated. Just a thought.

Whats the vibration like on the De's with them on the engine bars?

PS The GPS mount arrived safe and sound.. cheers.. :D

Having tried both sets of lights, the FF75 driving light is a much wider beam than the FF50, this is due to its much flatter and wider shape.
The FF50 is more of a pencil beam and has a much greater range than the FF75.
As to which type is the "best" is down to your own personal choice and the type of roads that you are generally riding on the most.
Up until quite recently I would have said that my choice would be the FF75's because of the much wider beam, however, I have been playing around with the settings with my FF50's.
I now have them both set about 5 to 10 degrees off the forward facing centre line, the result being is that I now have a good fan of light which also has the better range that the FF75's lack.

Does that make sense

I tried fitting 100 W bulbs. It didn't seem to make much of a difference on the dip beam, so I put the 50 W back in that. On the high beam it was more noticeable so I left the 100 W in the main beam.

No it's not just you :)
I had just had the lights off and they were not very well adjusted yet. I think I usually have them spread a bit more.

The fog lights don't give a spectacular amount of light anyway, I mainly have them on the be seen. And I like them on the crashbars under the tank because they are much less vulnerable there in case of a spill...

Looks OK, but I have had to replace a bulb once after about 6 months, and today I died on me again (4 weeks later)... So maybe that is due to the vibration.

Michel

Night time..

I will have to try to get some shots of my setup at night.
I like a really wide spread of light.

Both my FF75s were setup at Williams BMW, and are toed left slightly, but the spread of light is awsome.

I tend to ride on a lot of quiet backroads at night, the range of the main beam was never a problem. it was the pencil thin beam meant if you lent the bike over in the bend the beam went off track and the road disappeared into darkness. Now with the FF75's I get full coverage of the road, even on tight bends.

I havent had to change a bulb yet, but not had them on 6 months yet. Just was looking at mounting a Video camera on the engine bars, but i think the vibrations may be too high.

I have dropped the GS twice since the lights were fitted. Not had a problem with there position.

Migsel

Migsel - do you still do your light bars for the 1150GS ? If so, how much ?

Thanks - Phil (6X)

Sure do Phil :)

Just sent you the details by e-mail.

Cheers,
Michel

Just in from the pub but nvermind...
Migsel sent me a light bar and oil cooler cover - cool kit.
I tried PIAA blubs, shite, soory , I should say expensive shite.
Bought FF75 and Micro DE lights - -looks good but weather too good for fitting them, so it will have to wait!
Also,
My dip beam was set for drive on right, and I managed to follow what it says on p.37 - rotate the unit about 30 degrees anticlock to suit drive on left - not bad.
